What do you mean? They now suddenly can? I thought it was only if they sent it back to Bosch or something or took it for a drive.

I'll translate the email I got from my dealer:

Bij BMW Belgium zijn ze de laatste tijd enorm streng op chiptuning.
Als we een getunde bmw diesel aan ons computer hebben hangen
kunnen ze in Bornem al zien dat de wagen getund is en vervalt on
middelijk de garantie op de aandrijflijn.Onlangs nog meegemaakt.

At BMW Belgium they are very strict on chiptuning lately.
When we hook up a tuned diesel to our computer, they can see
in Bornem (guess it's the headquarters for BE) that the car is tuned,
and then the guarantee on the drivetrain is void immediately.
We've only recently experienced that.

Got latest news from Jan at Kempower.

Remember my car was tuned with 203hp/457nm
after kempower tuning 205/441nm, still could be better after I use cleaner "Diesel" crappy in belgium.

The difference is so huge in car handling, much better acceleration much more powerful that I couldn't understand the figures.

Jan (kempower) feedback:
He drove the car with the original tuning to BMW for ECU re-flashing before starting his job. He does not believe that my original dyno matches my car. Should be another dyno provided to me by my previous tuner to make me feel kind of happy, but I was not so the decision to go to kempower.

Kempower rocks !! :rocks:

my new engine, careful out there with other so called tuner

I've asked Kempower about this, they said this is not true and only mean to square the customer.

Kempower has good reputation and work closely with BMW.

Now, it's up to you to trust Kempower or BMW. I do not trust BMW

I heard you can get your tuning from BMW, too (well, actually from some certified partners, through BMW dealer) and that will NOT void any warranty.

Do you know anything about that?

Is Kempower such a case?

Any good reputation tuners closer to the Eastern side of Europe?

Kempower (www.kempower.be) is not BMW related.

In my country is used to be some BMW dealers that could "tune" your car if it was detuned.

eg. My car could come in 164hp or 150hp version, if your ordered the detune one for taxes they could "tune" by changing the ecu program back to 164hp. They called that tuning !! and charged a lot of money compared to the job done.

Now it's not possible anymore as BMW did change the way they flash and it's now linked to your car chassis number. So a 150hp can never get the 164hp program using the normal BMW flashing method.

That is all I've heard about BMW tuning your car.

Welll... my dealer works with CTH chiptuning,
but since now they claim it is detectable by BMW,
they make you sign a form first that voids your warranty
So there's no advantage in taking their tuner.

And when looking for a good tuner, these are the most important things:

1-DYNO - if they don't dyno your car before and after, they're doing a lousy job
2-reputation - try finding other customers, see how satisfied they are
3-warranty - a good tuner takes over the engine warranty.

I only know the ones in belgium, so you'll have to look around a bit

Well, thank you both for the info.
I am just at 1600 km so I guess I'll wait a little before making any steps, but a little info gathering from 320d-ers with experience can't hurt, especially since almost everybody in this forum seems to be on the other side of the Atlantic and therefore petrolheads .

And the rumour I was referring was about a "known case" (take it as you want) where the official BMW dealer offered an AC Schnitzer post-delivery tuning while keeping the warranty, based on the long standing relationship between BMW and the tuner house. However, no solid info and I definitely did not see it for myself.

Will some of you kind souls with tuned 320d's please remember to come back and post the overall experience in say 6 months?

Just did a really quick search and I found something:

"The engine upgrade, as Schnitzer agents JSN Motors calls it, consists of a Schnitzer management chip. It costs some R12 300, but it does have the advantage of retaining a full BMW warranty, something that very few engine tuners can boast about."

See http://www.cartorque.co.za/0140.htm.

It's not a diesel and it may be pricey, though.

Bump! ...(more than) 6 months have passed by...

Is any owner of remapped 320d still around? Any long term impressions?

Still very happy with the power increase!
I now have 93000km on the meter and no problems related to the tuning.
Did have a problem with the airco, but that's totally unrelated.

Looking to buy a 325D now, heard they can be chipped to 260HP easily

Just my few cents.. I got remap in Finland to my 320d and before remap the figures were 164hp/340nm in dyno. After remap 218hp / 472nm

feels like a new car...
