Performance steering wheel read real time MPH?

Hey so I ve been looking through the operators manual for the BMW performance steering wheel and Im just wondering if it has the capabiltity to give just real time MPH, thats all I need it for as my car is from Canada and I now live in CA. A new instrument cluster is 2K, steering wheel is 895 (and a lot cooler) but it needs to be able to just give me the speed Im going, can it do that?

Damn, thats what I was worried about.

Anyone have a cheaper alternative to switching out the instrument clusters, so that I have something in my car that reads MPH? HAven't searched this but do they have a speedo guage similar to boost/oil pressure guages etc?

What about just using a GPS? I know it is kind of annoying have that on all the time, but it is another option. Also, if you have GPS on your phone, i am sure there are apps.

Let me know if you end up buying one. Curious to see how well it works.

Problem with the aftermarket HUD's are that the factory windshield is not made for them. In a Vette with HUD, the windshield is special to allow the display to look correct when it is projected.

Most of the aftermarket HUD's have a small square of special transparent film that you have to apply to the windshield so that the projected display will appear.

I don't have any experience with this particular kit, but I have seen others. Without the special film the readout is crappy, with the film it is better - but not even close to the factory HUD with special windshield.

Trans Am owners have been retofitting the Vette HUD in their dashes for a while - very difficult because you have to cut the dash, as they recess into dash, & adjustments have to be made to metal framework under dash as there is no room for the HUD. When done correctly, the HUD unit itself looks great & as if factory, but still without the special windshield, the display is no where close to what it looks like in the Vette...

Personally, I don't think you'll be happy with an aftermarket HUD, or mebbe I'm just too picky

I've been using a HUD app on my iphone. My phone fits perfectly near the vents that blow on the windshield. The roadspeed is accurate as it uses GPS to read speed.

I also like they have amber color that matches the OEM BMW lighting well. Check it out here:

Well that's pretty cool! I assume the phone projects that image onto the windshield? Looks OK at night - but does it work that good in daylight?

With the tru HUD the image appears to be floating in 3D space in front of your eyes with no background - just lettering/numbers, and it looks as good in day as night. That's what I don't like about the aftermarket - they look as if they are a movie projected on a screen - the 'screen' being your windshield.

I guess unless you have seen both it's hard to explain...
