Possible to add navigation?
Anyone ever install a factory navigation into a car that came without it? I really want CIC in my car, but my issue seems to be locating a dash. I called a couple junk yards but no one local seems to have any. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Suffice to say that it would be a MAJOR job and very costly if you purchased parts from BMW...I'd suggest a nice Garmin or just trade cars for one with the factory NAV. Problem is - updating the maps in the factory system is REALLY expensive ($300+ every time), whereas a lifetime subscription from Garmin is only around $80. Plus, you would have to also add the iDrive components to control it.
BTW - looks like our cars are VERY similar, including that front lip, wheels, color, etc. You have black interior and brushed aluminum trim too? And...I'm a CT native, although from up in the NW area of the state.

Not worth it... you are better off stripping your car, selling it, and buying the exact same thing but with Nav.

I use an app on my iphone called 'waze'. It's a totally free app, plugs into the adapter in the center console, plays pandora, and the nice woman speaks over the music to give me turn by turn directions to wherever I am going.
Try it if you have an iphone -- it's free!

I use a Garmin with lifetime updates and a 5 inch screen for better viewing. It's mounted with a Pro Clip and looks very clean and easily removed for storage, recharging, updating and used in other vehicles. The Pro Clip is not a universal mount. It is ordered to fit a specific GPS make and model along with a specific make and model of vehicle.

I've seen it done a few times on the forums. Check out the Navigation/I-Drive section of e90post. The vendor(s) there are always doing group-buys.

I have my front lip and M3 trunklid lip painted to match as well - really like SGM, although Space Gray is my next favorite (on my wife's 128 Conv.). I mount the Garmin in that small space between the instrument hood and windshield pillar. I had it hardwired so that the power cable/traffic antenna comes up at the base of the pillar and is not visible underneath my registration/inspection stickers on the windshield. I used one of those plastic disks that come with the Garmin and stuck it just above the vent slots. It's right in my line of sight, although mine is a 4" display. Works well for me and is nearly the same as the one they want $600 for from BMW.

Oh yeah, its the same voice as Siri, it is interesting that they didn't add that for the 4. I can see the 4 not getting the 3D maps but voice guidance should be in there.

waste of money...get a garmin with lifetime traffic maps and weather and just leave it on the seat next to you and listen to it

It is quite easy and definitely 'worth it' to add nav to a non-nav E9x.
I've done it and the hardest part is finding a dash - it cost me +/- 1500USD and works flawlessly. CCC may not have the advanced features you would find in a TomTom but the level of integration is unbeatable. Despite popular belief you can get your power/ground and both CANbus signals from right behind the CCC/CIC to power and run the CID and ZBE. Let me know if you have any questions. Once you collect all the parts (which are getting cheaper by the minute) the install can be done in half a day with basic tools. |
