Direct Line p*ss take

Lots of fun with insurers today, this is about my house insurance.

Was with Direct Line paying £428 for buildings and contents, 'automatic renewal came through for end of month at £630. "its all so easy, you need do nothing etc "

Sod that I thought, 1 call and I got a better policy, via AA at £360 yesterday lunch.

Rang to cancel renewal with Direct Line, and they are asking why? I tell them got a cheaper quote and straight away they offer a 40% discount if we stay with them.

So if you are with Direct Line, you may want to take note. Had they sent a renewal through with say a 10% increase I would have paid it without a second thought. How to keep long term customers, NOT.

40% off DL still cheaper than AA - did you stay with DL or move on principle?

too right, but saved cash so far, bollocks to them. I suspect it's because they are owned by RBS (i.e. us, the humble taxpayer [unless any pikeys are reading]) and they are busy rebuilding their balancesheet by taking their cutomers pants down.

It's a sad world we live in these days. These companies rely on inertia and deliberately penalise loyal customers unless we complain.

I had a similar conversation with my bank the other day. They upgraded me to a 'gold' account about 10 years ago, telling me it was a reward for my loyalty. They've since tried to charge me a monthly fee for it several times.

Each time I've told them they can shove their account up their arse before I'll pay anything.

They are all the same...with Natwest a few years back building and contents went from £380 to £600 (i didn't do anything), the following year £800, but a phone call later down to £350 price matched against Directline...the year after £850 and they wouldn't budge. So went with directline for £350 who sent a renewal this year for £680, their new customer quote showed £340 yet the closest they'd come to was £60 short...needless to say I cancelled and rejoined online.

All that said...I've found both Natwest and Directline (part of same group as you know Im sure) to be faultless at dealing with things. I've been unfortunate enough to need to claim (through Directline) for the theft of a car and it was settled promptly. Then again for a burglary and the process was again snag free.
