Help! Engine is done for...

Hey all,

I ran in to a big problem...I spun a bearing. Would rebuilding the engine and replacing parts cost more than just buying a new motor and swapping it out? I have a 328 XI...since I'm buying a new motor and already paying for the labor...would it be THAT much more to just do a full on 335 swap while i'm at it?

Thanks

rebuilding would be your cheapest option, if all other parts are OK to use. if your swapping motors though, find one that is worth it like an e46 M3 motor or Z4m motor.

Yea i'm new to this, just seeing what kind of options there are out there. If I have to replace my motor (if I can't reuse most of the parts and have to rebuild), I want to see what kind of options I have for performance upgrade that would work.

Thanks for the fast reply

Lubrication

Maybe the 15,000 mile oil changes aren't so great?
Maybe the fluids are not "lifetime", unless they mean end of warranty period. I'd call BMW and bitch. Newer engines don't fall apart like that out of warranty or not. I have a Chevy Prizm and a Ford van outside each with almost 200k on them. They need gas and Dino oil every 3k.

My BMW 328i with 70k currently better outlive them both or it'll be my last.

bought the car used almost 9 months ago...dealer said it just had an oil change. I put about 8.5k miles in since then w/o an oil change (i know its my fault and lesson learned)...Checked the oil first when I heard the noise and it was low. I put in a quart and the noise still didn't go away. No check engine light and drove slowly around my neighborhood and it drives fine still...just makes a crazy noise. Taking it to the shop tomorrow to see if its the bearing, and if it is, if they can just replace the bearing without having to replace anything else.

I'm just trying to plan for worst case scenario.

So you are saying you don't know what the sound is and you are assuming you spun a bearing? Might want to hold off on "full panic mode" until you get it checked out.

OP make a youtube vid for us to hear.

If you're still driving it, i'm guessing it's just the lifters like Craven said.

At idle you don't really hear it unless you listen really hard. When you start moving slow around 10mph, it knocks in long durations. The faster you go, the shorter the duration between knocks.

I only drove it from when it started making noise back to my house, and again around the neighborhood slowly after adding more oil. I'd make a video but I'm afraid to make things worse. I'm having it towed first thing tomorrow and see what the problem is...Sounds like a spun rod bearing though.

Are you under a CPO warranty or anything?

des it sound like a "ticking" rather then a clunk?

the lifters are subtle sometimes, and when you rev it up, it does get faster as the RPM's climb. If you blew a bearing I would think the Crank sensors would catch that and flag you real fast.

But I could be totally wrong, no way to know over the internet lol

The car should tell you how many miles until your next oil change. Maybe someone reset the computer but didnt change the oil.

You may want to consider saving a sample of your used oil and sending some away for analysis. They'll be able to tell you the condition of the used oil and what was found in it. It's $20-$30 for the report. Blackstone Labs

Let us know how everything works out.

Wow talk about jumping the gun. First find out what the real problem is. Then panic all you want if needed.

+1.

IMO I think a N54 engine swap would be the easiest on these cars if worst comes to worst.
