dealer service and maintenance - worth it?

sorry if this has been asked before.

was hoping to get an e90post educated decision on the service and maitenance option from the dealer, dont pickup car until May, but as i didn't get a great discount from dealer (3%) i should of asked you guys! as i would of gone via coast to coast and saved around 10%

so without further ado i dont want to make any more uneducated decisions without consulting you guys!

i understand there are a few options with maitenance covering brakes etc.

would anyone consider/or already have gone for this?

i think if i were to do it, 5 years would be the only option as things will most likely wear out > 3 years, plus it would enhance the residuals?

it looks to be around £1400 for the top package, how much scope is there for discount, i presume dealers would be on commission for this. I understand you have 60 days from registration to opt as well

cheers guys!

In two years ownership I've spent £150 on my car in maintenance, £1400 buys a lot of stuff!! How hard do you drive?

I've got the full service and maintenance package for the 5yrs / 60k miles on the E46, but only as BMW were giving it away on all diesel 3 series at the time.

To be honest I think that the service and maintenance does not make a lot of sense unless you are a seriously hard driver. Whilst the service package may appeal if you want to have all the servicing covered in advance, I don't think that the maintenance makes all that much sense. The likes of Paddywac from the UK section that gets through a set of brakes in record time might have use for it (though you only get one set), but will you get through a clutch or set of discs and pads in that time? If not you will have paid £700 for a set of wiper blades every service

My advice would be to call the service dept of a couple of dealers and try and get prices for the various services and things like clutch and brake replacement. Then you can do the maths with your eyes wide open.

... and let us know the results of course

HTH,

Matt

We had it on our last E46 and didn't even know until we took the car for its only service. We don't do a lot of mileage and now the 3 has condition based sevicing we were advised against purchasing it.

Regards

Chris

I asked my dealer if he thought the service package was better value than just getting it serviced normaly & he didn't think there was much in it.

Unless you are going to do 60,000 miles in the 5 years I dont think the maintanence is worth it. I've had my current car now for 4.5 years and apart from tyres (which are not included in the maintanence pack) i've bought some wiper blades.

I guess with a lot of things it's a bit of a gamble. there's obviously piece of mind to be had with these packages and they may even help when selling the car on.

If it was me (i dont do too many miles) i might go for service only.

(also, you can't modify your car if you have one of these packages)

I suspect, like Insurance (which effectively I think it is), if more people claim more than the charge than don't they wouldn't make any money. Therefore I suspect that on average most people don't claim work to the value of the charge. Which suggests that for most people they'd be better off paying as they go!

There's probably some flaw in my logic there somewhere

thats pretty much the train of thought i went thought when deciding against the service and maintenance...

my car is leased, and they wanted an extra 60 quid a month for the package which is upwards of £2k over the 3 years so it just didn't make sence to me...

even with tires i'd be hard pushed to hit that, and they're not even included as far as i know...

they're not, just brake pads/discs, clutch assembly (if worn) and wiper blades.

doesn't seem worth it to me

Surely the clutch should be covered by warranty? I know (because I always seem to get through them in quick time) that discs/pads aren't....

it specifically states “if worn” on bmw.co.uk. If it’s faulty then I guess you would get one under warranty, but not for wear & tear.

maybe it’s classed as a consumable, likes breaks & wipers?

An honest dealer? What was he after!

It's a bit like that puzzle where there's someone who tells the truth and someone who tells lies at heaven's gates, how do you find which one is guarding the door to heaven..... and you end up doing the opposite.

So surely we must now assume that the package is the best value since sliced bread !!!!

I was looking at the coupe last oct & was debating whether to wait for the m-sport or not.

the chap advised me to wait. he said that's not was he was supposed to be saying but his goal was to have a happy customer at the end of the day.

apparantly he has left now though. perhaps they sacked him for being too honest
