I recommend Tirerack, as well.

You would be ok with a 17" square setup. Downsizing for winter improves snow traction and it's cheaper.

I have my Rial Salernos + Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 (225/45R17) from them since 2007 and they've been pretty good to me. Used them on my previous '07 E92 328 Sport, planning to use them on my '10 E90 M-Sport.

Prices are decent and the quality is fine.

Lol, its BMW they all sell very expensive options (perhaps all dealer for that matter) they need a huge markup to make ppl think their stuff is better.

I suggest getting a separate rim for winter, its not good keep removing your tires from the rim. As others suggested get a 17" rim used OEM or a cheap 17". I just bought a used 17" OEM rim now I am looking for winter tires.

More like half of that...I spent 1600 on a set of m5 reps and Hankooks W300 last winter..brand new. No reason to have to spend a lot on winter wheels..just get better tires.

You can use 18s for sure but 17s will still work its just the rims are cheaper and the tires are cheaper compared to 18s. I also prefer slightly more rubber.

Unfortunately no, I sold this set up in favour of BBS RE(which are now sold too) 2 weeks after ownership. The person is on this board maybe he can post his pictures. But I can tell you that while it didn't sit too well on the E92 M3, it sit really well on the new owners E90 335

Did you say what kind of winter priorities you have?

Softest ride?
Lowest risk of rim damage?
Ice traction?
Deep snow?
Longer tread life?
Better handling on bare roads?
Lowest overall cost?

You generally have to choose: Studless ice&snow or performance winters.
You can have all of this, if you have two cars ;-)

I also run M6x18-W300 Hancooks from SimplyTire - you just have to keep your traction control on, feather the throttle, and be careful on ice. Use a square set-up, no wider than 225.

i picked up used VMR CLS style 18s with W300s 225s up front and 255s rear for between $800-$900, used. Search the various forums. You will find a decent deal somewhere used. If not, I'd go with SimplyTires

I heard a BMW driving instructor say "don't buy snow tires from BMW, BMW sells pretty snow tires, you need real snow tires." Then he said he drives Nokian Hakkapelittaa's.

Tirerack.com X 1000! If you are looking for both wheels and tires, Tirerack prices are hard to beat. The website automatically only allows you to choose wheels and tires that will fit your car. If you go to the wheel and tires forum, you should find a guy named Gary. He can answer almost any BMW tire or wheel question.

I bought my winter wheels (and first snow tires) from them. Tirerack house brand wheels, Sport Edition, are decent quality and cheap. Light too (22 lbs). Shipped to your door in about a week.

If you're in the Markham area, try http://www.joycitytires.com/index.html...

It's a small one-man shop, but he does good work and very reasonable prices.

Some more questions:

- So I'm thinking of getting some nice new VMR rims for winter... Would they hold up in GTA winter conditions (salt, etc...) or would the finish be totally ruined?

- Opinions on Blizzak LM-25s/LM-60s for GTA winter and occasional cottage country trips?

- Do runflats have less traction in snow than non runflats?
