On a related note, I think I'll try and join the Iron Butt association next near..... ride a bike 1,000 miles in under 24 hours.
London to just short of Aberdeen and back again in a day.... can't be that hard can it? |

how about Harlow to Bridlington in a fully laiden 1998 high sided MAN 7.5tonne luton removal lorry with no fuel gauge and a maximum speed of 45mph!
well over 5 hrs on the way there. on the way back the non working fuel gauge got me, and I sat on the side of the M62 for an extra 4 hrs until the recovery arrived, and then still had to drive back to Harlow, but only after the £140k Merc Actros recovery unit (man what a machine that was!) had effectively bump started me round the services car-park. |

I once drove from Bath to Lancaster (216 Miles), and it started snowing at Cirencester... 13 hours it took me eventually in the Beemer... Got out and walked across 3 lanes of motorway for a piss at one point though

Had to drop off my brother in law at Heathrow. It was an 8am flight so set off at 2am!...all the way there non stop...dropped him off (at the drop off point) and drove back....in a Toyota Yaris(!).
Got home at noon and couldn't remember the past 8 hours. Sometimes you just drive like a zombie

Glasgow to London (and vice versa) non-stop when the car permits. eg Merc E270D or BMW X5 40D. Very easy drive at night. Cruise control on. 430 miles door to door.
Won't say how long it took though |

i think i did 900km in 1 day driving in outback australia.
Had to stop for fuel though! 4.0l ford falcons aint great on fuel! My parents drove from Naples, Italy to Exeter (1,400 miles) in under 24 hours once - not a fun trip...

Haha,
This reminds me of when I was 20 and got a job at Terrasearch in Greenford. I'd never been out of London (bearing in mind I was 20) and I was told to go to Spalding in Lincolnshire. I'd never needed a map as I knew London like the back of my hand. So I saw a sign for Oxford on the M40 and thought "that up North", so I drove there. Saw a sign for Birmingham and thought "yeah, that's up north" so I went there. Got out and asked, after several blank looks was told to head for Leicester, so went there, you get the plan Anyway 7 hours and 250 miles later I got to site, where they were just packing up. I wasn't too popular, a young cockney chappie amongst loads of Northerners in the pub that evening. Last edited by Boz335i; 04-18-2012 at 05:10 AM.. |

That reminds me that when I was a child we'd set off on the family holiday to the south of France. We'd do the trip in as short a time as possible with me rattling around in the back of the Volvo with not much more than my own imagination to entertain me.
With young children now the trip would probably take about a month and the back of the car would be kitted out like NASA control. Don't know they're born, mutter, mutter... |

Not to mention impossible to average that high a speed in real world (legal) driving. Especially with the first two hours being in congested south east, and avg. speed cameras at roadworks, a driver would have to average 100+mph in the last 4 hours to bring the average speed up to 80mph, so sorry but I value my licence, as my career and livelihood depend on it. I would not even dream of breaking the speed limit, certainly by such massive margins, on my first long journey on unfamiliar roads. |

Back when everything was in black and white!! Memories similar - back of the Old Man's Wolseley 1500 in 1963 to Italy one-stop. Didn't realise it then, but the trip must have been mammoth in those days. |
