Ticking.....
I have a 2007 335i and at cold start up the engine will tick...? then it will go away after the idol drops when it is warmed up. Any suggestions

Very broad, this car has inherent characteristics that are normal ticking, and ones that tick that are not normal.
Is the ticking metallic, where does the sound stem from? |

We have had some cases of n54's requiring lifter replacement. Most of the times its an injector. It is tied to cold weather. I've ha a rash of failed fuel injectors lately.

It sounds like a metallic rattle. Almost like a heat shield.... If I barely give it gas it goes away then when I let off it will come back. It only does this for like 1 minute then when the RPM's level out it goes away for good!

Ha, dealer made this happen for me... left the diff exhaust hangers off. very similar as you describe... metal to metal on start up, but comes from the rear of course. I went to the tech's bench that was working on my car and found 3 sets of these nuts. So multiple cars were running around like this.

turbos are now under an 8/80 warranty. If you fall into that range go get a free set from the dealer. If not, there are a few bandaids but to be completely honest an 07 is going to rattle. Only way to truly rectify it is to replace them. Let me clarify though they might rattle but they have not failed, the turbos are still working, they are just rattling, and they will for years to come without trouble.

Ok thank you!! I'm pretty good with mechanical things and vehicles. It doesn't seem to be anything major I looked at the turbos while it was running and it's definitely a rattle. No worries! Thanks again guys for the help!

Ticking sound is 9 times out of 10, the injectors.
A rattling, would be wastegate rattle, it sounds a good bit different than a tick which goes with the revolution of the engine.
