Well, in the thread he did state he took the pictures while waiting for the ambulance. Doesn't quite explain why he hadn't at least tried to bandage the hand, though. Personally, I think I'd be hopping about screaming and cussing. For a set of fingers that have gone through a chain sprocket the wound looks pretty clean, not oily and dirty.

Oh dear. Wonder what the (ex)ring was made of?
I have to say I've wondered at the trend of making mens rings out of titanium or similar; at least a high-carat gold ring might stretch or snap before you lost the finger, but titanium or tungsten or similar, no chance. A&E aren't going to be able to cut it off in a hurry either. Got a few climbers at work, as well as a few bike enthusiasts; might have to ruin some lunches |

A guy at my work got his gloved finger wrapped around a drill machine last year. His finger was ripped off and attached to it was about 2ft of tendon which had came all the way from his arm. Don't worry, No pics.

No, lost for good. It was the reference to the OP being a rookie mistake. The guy who lost his finger was past 60. The machine had no brake dead stop and wound down ripping his tendon out as it went. When I was a first year apprentice long ago, I tried to remove coolant from a milling cutter with a rag so I could see better to take my first touch. I got caught and got such a bollocking I never put my hands near anything moving again.

Running machinery and fingers, jewellery, bits of clothing, long hair, rags etc just do not mix.
You don't need to fear machines but God help you if you don't respect them. The human body is way more fragile than your average lathe/milling machine/motorbike chain/engines. You get something caught while the thing is running and you run the risk of causing injuries like those above. Everyone makes mistakes that's for sure but you need to mitigate your risks and be focused on the job at hand at all times when working on/with machinery with exposed moving parts. Just be careful and pay attention and be patient. Also, the chap with the bike chain didnt really know what he was doing. He should have asked for help or sought advice on how best to clean his chain before doing it "his way" which cost him his fingers. The biggest mistake he made was running the freaking engine. Why not just do it with the engine off, bike in neutral and use your hand to control the turn of the sprocket and chain??? /facepalm. |

There ought to be a warning on this thread. Seriously.
First year of my apprenticeship, one of the simple jobs was to part off, face, drill and machine cut (M12) a piece of bar. Even after all the warnings one guy went to brush a piece of swarf off the entrance to the hole just after he'd machine cut the threads. It grabbed his finger and the thread wound on his finger all the way up to the knuckle. He was so shocked/confused, he didn't even hit the eStop. Luckily, he didn't loose his finger, but it made us all just a little bit more aware after that... All the climbing, kiting, biking, DIY, Engineering I do (out of office hours) I get fed up with taking my wedding ring on and off (and then worrying about losing it). I've just stopped wearing it, even though it annoys the hell out of my missus. I might get a tat.
