Opinion on water pump change

The dealership called me back, and it is the water pump. They are saying they will cover 15% and BMW will cover 15% and I would be responsible for 70% which would be $550. I'm 6 months over on the warranty but only at 47k miles. Should I fight for them to cover more?

bmw has a thing called good will (as do other manufacturers).

a pump failing in 47K miles is pathetic... bmw should cover the entire cost under good will.

however.... you are outside the warranty, dealers can be dicks. 30% off the job is better then nothing.

good luck !

That's actually a pretty good deal. If you're out of warranty, I'd recommend going for it, and bringing the SA a six pack when they're done.

I'd take the deal they've offered, you're out of warranty so technically speaking they're under no obligation to pay for anything. $550 labor+parts is cheaper than any indy you'll find, though I agree it's extremely lame that these pumps are failing at under 50K miles. That is NOT a high mileage car, the pump needs to be more robust than that.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, I told them to start work because I agree, $550 is about what it would cost me to do it. And he said that's on the high end. Like others have said, it's just ridiculous that the water pump fails at less than 50k and I don't feel like we should be responsible for it for such low mileage. I've seen too many posts about failed water pumps lately.

I would have them install a new thermostat while they're at it. The part is fairly cheap and the labor should be about the same. If they replace just the water pump now and the thermostat goes bad down the road you will be basically paying for the same job twice.

Actually 3 series water pumps since 1991 for the 6 cylinder engines have had poor reliability. These were mechanical pumps now we have electrical pumps made by Contential and VDO. They keep improving the pumps so they will get there. I keep a new pump and new aluminum bolts in my trunk for the happy moment when it fails...

That you have to keep a water pump in your trunk is pretty pathetic. Sad that these cars aren't more reliable.

Water pump failure sucks. Mine gave out on me on my way to work with 85,000 miles on the odo. Luckily, mine is covered under the ext warranty minus $60 for towing and $50 for deductible.

Glass is half full = yes, glad it happened now and not after warranty runs out.

Reality = pissed that it's even an issue of failure at this mileage.

Yeah I have to agree with you. Seems like water pumps tend to fail more often on N54 than N52 Im seeing.

Any other issues you have fixed under extended warranty?

Under my extended warranty, I've had the following fixed:

1. water pump - as of today - stranded me on the freeway
2. oil filter housing
3. dme replaced - limp mode to dealer and the dashboard was basically blowing up with every warning light going off and almost stranded me on the freeway
4. ignition coils and a couple of spark plugs

Within the original bumper to bumper coverage, I've had the following replaced:
1. fuel injectors
2. brake booster vacuum
3. hpfp - limp mode to dealer
4. left exhaust muffler (actually, it was good-willed because it was just a tad outside of the bumper to bumper warranty)

I think I've actually had my fuel injectors replaced on 2 separate occassions but can't confirm as I don't have my paperwork in front of me right now.

WOW!! I feel your pain!

Me on the contrary besides from the Turbos you have, have none of these issues replaced yet well I should not say that I recently replaced my spak plugs as preventive maintenance. I am at 101k miles.

I got a transmission good will'd by Acura with 700 miles out of warranty. In comparison, this deal is pathetic.

Exactly. The car has 85k miles and I drive mainly 80% on the freeway and have never tracked the car so for all of these things to go wrong, it's not a good feeling.

Well, I'll be picking up my car this morning. I don't think my SA will be there but I'm not sure if I'll gift him something or not. I know it's a good deal because the Indy shop down the street was gonna charge $1300 to do it. I'll just be glad to get out of the 4 cyl Camry LE they gave me as a loaner. Yep...Camry. There's a Toyota dealership right next door so they use those for most of their loaners.
