How much was a gallon....
Even though we think fuel costs are out of control for us here in the U.S. it's really not on average, when compared to many other nations/regions around the globe. There are even a few where costs plummet compared to us, but of course those are the oil rich nations we're buying from. That said, when you got your first car or BMW, what was the cost of a gallon at the time? I would almost bet that you remember, because if you're like me, you've probably said while standing at the pump, "DAMN, I wish I were paying that price again!". I know when I bought my first Beemer, a gallon cost a whopping 89 cents and this was back in '95-96. I lived in Kansas at the time and I'm sure that played a role, but 89 cents? DAMN, I wish I were paying that price again! So how much was it for you then?

About $0.85/gal when I bought my E21 in May, 1979. That was just before the 1979-1980 oil shock, which is when prices broke through the $1 barrier. In the mid-late 80's gas was below $1 again in many places, but that was short-lived. Here are some interesting charts documenting prices paid by a person who has kept records of what he's paid going back 34 years: http://www.randomuseless.info/gasprice/gasprice.html

I think my first gallon of gas I bought at 16 was $1.37 for premium 93.... I would have to be almost puttering up to the pump if I wanted to fit $20 worth of gas in my car... Though I just paid $2.36 for some E85 in Austin, Texas!

I'm not sure the price when I was first driving, but I do remember paying $0.799 once. Things have certainly changed since then.

Yes I remember gas being less than a buck when I was a wee little lad and thought nothing of it in the back of my dad's Oldsmobile (remember them?) Regal Cutlass wagon. Now I long for those good ol' days...
Anyone paying quality (Chevron or Shell preferably) diesel cheaper than $3.50?

I was working at a gas station when I was 16 in '77 and we had the oil shocks. When gas went over $1.00 a gallon none of the pumps were built to handle that so you they put half the price in the pump and you paid double. For example Gas and $1.10 they put .55 in the mechanical price thing and when the pump read $5.50 for 10 gallons you paid $11. Normal price was $0.62.

Well I'm only 21 so when I got my first car it was around '08. Let me put it this way, I'm in the group of people who would never wish they were paying what they payed when they first started driving haha.

Still dirt cheap compared to the cost of the warming. Keep on guzzling e9x members!
The true cost of gas should be ~$10 per gallon if the negative externalities are recognized and included on top of the prices today. |

Filled up with 91 this morning...$1.26/L
Given 3.78 litres in a US gallon = $4.76 / US gallon Today's exchange rate is $0.95 US, that would be $4.52USD/gallon.

Okay, I'll bite. What is a "negative externality." (I'm going to just love this social engineering crap).

Nothing social about it - its scientific fact that burning fossil fuels emit gasses that deplete ozone and generally degrade air quality. Now, the tricky and loaded part comes when trying to quantify that cost. I wont even try, but I will admit there is a cost. |

I could be dating myself here, but they used to say that all the disease caused from horse poop in the streets was a "negative externality"....or something like that.

I kind of hope it keeps going up, it'll make alternatives much more cost-appealing. Another 80 grand from now and I'm not getting an M3, it'll be a Tesla.

There is no quantitative cost on the degradation of the ozone, let alone the lack of reality in burning fossil fuels in the realtion to burning up the ozone layer. (In other words, global warming, witch is a complete myth) |
