BT Tool or Stealership?

I been up on fence last month if I should buy BT tool with 3 vin's or go to dealership to get my E90 fixed. Currently I have Seatbelt and Airbag red lights on in cluster, Which in virginia doesnt pass inspection. I also need new battery soon soo...ya.

Not sure even with BT tool if I can fix the seatbelt/airbag problem myself. What would u guys recommend.

Good question. Try the TORQUE app on ur android phone or tablet (free version) and just buy the Bluetooth adaptor on ebay for 15 dlls. Its worth a shot. I did this to turn off my service engine light.

Thanks for that advice but the seatbelt/airbag are bmw specific codes they wont show on OBDII reader I have one of those too. Thats why its such hard decision for me... 280$ for scanner and Maybe fix it but probly not and a good 1k for dealership most likely I assume.

coding setup cost 100 or less.

coding setup cost 100 or less.(less with and 06 because you only need a Kcan cable)(you can get the setup off ebay)
Not Vin limited and coding and other stuff is possible that
the Bav Tool won't do but its not as user friendly .

http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=368

It takes awhile to set it up and some understanding of computers.

Also there is a recall on the passanger seat senors for some model 06's that's good for 10 years.

You realize of course, that with either option - simply resetting the light will not fix the problem - the light will just come back on...

So best option is to get the actual problem that created the light fixed, I would definitely check into the recall issue to see if it applies.

There is a recall on 2 of the conditions that cause this error, so there is good chances the repair for the underlying problem should be covered for free, even outside of warranty/CPO.

Otherwise, the BT tool repays itself in 2 visits to clear a code.

Ya im going to take it in based on your advice, My dealer said I will still have to cover the diagnostic fee. They also said there is no recall on my car at dealer but I was very firm that there is. Anyways they had me call bmw NA and lady on phone said there was recall so I had BMW NA call my dealer and TELL them there is one so thats what they said in end... There is one for my 330i but they may still charge me diagnostic labor. Which is BS I think but whatever.

Ya I realize resetting code isnt the solution I just figured the BT tool will give me exact insight on whats causing it so I can fix it myself plus I can register new battery without having to go to dealer.

I cant use the ebay bmw setup cause I have no computers in house anymore that are 32bit win xp or win 7 sadly, Otherwise I would buy ebay setup - BT tool runs on 64bit xp or win 7

ERGH!! I can't mine to clear out the SES light using the torque app and bt adapter. Maybe my adapter is a POS. BTW out of curiosity did you clear the code with the engine running or with the engine off?

Koss, it depends on what is causing your light. If the problem still exist, it will not clear until it is fixed. For example, a current misfire. Emission related can be cleared, but will return. What code is the app giving you?

Statement on voluntary recall involving front passenger seat sensor mat on U.S.A. model BMWs
Today, BMW announced a voluntary recall regarding the front passenger air bag seat sensor mat involving

approximately 200,000 Model Year 2004-06 vehicles. Affected are certain Model Year 2006 3-Series, Model Year 2004-06

5-Series, and Model Year 2004-06 X3 vehicles, depending upon seat type. BMW has found that the sensor mat may become

damaged during vehicle usage depending upon the manner and frequency of the front passenger’s entry and exit.
BMW will begin sending customer letters in late September 2008. Affected owners may continue to drive their

vehicles; however, customers should contact their BMW Center if the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag

“on-off” lamp are illuminated simultaneously. In this situation, BMW recommends customers not to use the front

passenger seat and have the vehicle serviced immediately. At the present time, we are unaware of any accidents or

injuries as a result of this issue.

Copied from another forum..Is this the recall you thinking of? Doubt it will be covered. DONT Kneel in your seats or allow kids to use as springboards..

Brings up a good question about seat sensor pads I have.

Who benefits from these expensive pads the most? Insurance Company..from not having to replace the bag if no one is sitting there? Wonder if you could get the Insurance company to discount your rate BECAUSE you have these and ALL fail eventually..or offer free replacement..they way cheaper than bags I assume...
Think there is already a WARNING label to NOT put kids in seat..or mentioned in Manual

Just fanning the Fire here....

cantiecar interface is what I use.

Engine off but key fob ON where all the lights show on dashboard. Then after all the lights turn off except for SES then u use the TORQUE app on ur phone or tablet and click menu and go where it says clear error logs or something like that. Make sure there is connection established between the BT adaptor and your phone. I had to configure this by choosing the right connection between Wifi and bluetooth. Make sure you are using the right one.

On the diag setup

If you have windows 7 pro or the pro version of windows you can download
a xp 32 bit emulator program . The only program from the coding board
that won't run under a 64 bit system is ncsexpert.
Also there is some doubt as to whether and 06 actually needs battery registration.
I bought a cheap Kcan cable along with 2 disks worth of software from Ebay
and I have all the base programs and DIS57 and SSS . I had to update the
daten files for the base programs and it was kind of hard to get DIS57 going as you have to do it in VMware . But it works and as often as I would use it I think it was worth it. Also it can do things that the BT tool can't do such as write in the values for new injectors or calibrate sensors and sub modules.
And you can do useful coding things like program your windows
to go up with the fob and the AC not to turn on every time you hit
the auto button.
