Uprated brake pads 335d
I've just got my 335d and it had new brakes when I brought it , but I live near Milton Keynes and if anyone has been there they will know it's kinda like a race track and can be very heavy on the brakes at times
When I brake down heavy from the top end of the speed limit the front brakes don't like it and make a Loud noise a drowning noise , I've only ever had this on old pads and a car which was 5 up and I was on my own so it says to me The pads have glazed over and got a Nasty shine ? Or there just budget pads ? I am normally good on my brakes but I want to know there gonna be up to the job if I go on one and need them Are there any uprated pads or what pads can people reckonmend a good strong pad Brembo maybe ? I got a price on ebc as I can get -50% off as a mate works at silverstone , I normally run yellow stuff in my Hondas but the bmw is a lot heavier then my old type r or Crx As also if I replace Pads will I have to replace wears sensors or will these be ok ? |

I've been advised by a local Indy who does a lot of track prepping that EBC Yellow Stuff with OEM discs will do a top job, certainly enough for fast road and occasional track use.
I think you can re-use wear indicators but even if you can't they're not expensive. |

Your rumbling sounds more like DTV (disc thickness variation) this means your discs are shot unless you get them skimmed.
But I run yellows on my 335i (same brakes as d). Very good indeed, great bite from cold and stays firm when hot - and easy to get hold of. The wear sensors can be re-used as long as they are not worn (they wear in stages for a long while, so could be part worn) IIRC the yellows are aimed at heavy cars, so should be fine on ours. Quote from their website "Yellowstuff is especially appreciated on Trucks for towing and heavy loads and where wheel and tire oversize upgrades have been fitted"... http://ebcbrakes.com/product/yellows...nd-track-pads/ Last edited by doughboy; 03-25-2013 at 08:45 AM.. |

Don't be at all tempted by slotted/drilled discs.
I fitted some slotted EBC discs and pads to my 530, and they were noisy under light/medium conditions, although OK when pushed hard. I too can vouch for EBC pads - the lack of dust deposited on the wheels is enough of a reason to use them, never mind the braking. Remember to run them in properly before using them in serious anger - the pad facing material is designed to bed your discs in to the pads. I ran mine in, but obviously not enough, as near the end of the running in mileage (I forget what it was now - 200 miles??) I used them very enthusiastically on a favourite stretch of road and ended up stopped at the junction at the end of the road in serious clouds of brake dust and smoke. |

My brake pads are due now, both front and rear, and i think i'll go for the yellowstuff, they sound really good. Might upgrade to goodridge stainless steel brake lines too, but will probably leave the disks as they are.
Bit of a silly off topic question, but if we do the brake pads ourselves and get the service light reset, we'll still have full BMW service history right, as brakes aren't serviceable? I just don't want to pay £150-200 labour for a stamp that might not be needed. If i do, then when i come to trade the car in, can BMW say it hasn't got full BMW service history as they will see no records if any brake pad replacements? |

I wouldn't put anything by EBC on any of my cars. I'd rather the OEM stuff. If I was after a pad upgrade I'd go for the DS2500's...
If I was replacing the lot on a budget I'd go for Brembo discs and pads. |

I had some reds on a car a few years back that broke up (they were on when purchased)
After doing a bit of research into them after having the issue it appeared to be a common issue - not just with the reds, along with discs warping etc. Not for me. |

What other pads would be good upgrades from OEM? I want some good performing ones with low dust and noise, as i'll be tracking occasionally in the future.

I've used EBC Yellowstuff pads for the last 5 years, no problems with them. I do believe EBC use to have quality control issues, but I'm more than happy with the price/performance of their Yellowstuff pads.

But now they are all completely different compounds and don't suffer from those problems. I'm not saying they're the best, they're not, but they're a LOT better than the OE shite and any 335i/d fitment is hard to come by. BTW DS2500 are better, but not available for 335i/d..... |

Brake pads don't come Into service history due there just ware and tear things
Red pads are shite and don't work from cold either they have very little feel till they are about 50degrees or something like that and make the pedal feel like wood , Yellows work from cold and are a harder compound I did 2 track days and a Years driving and still had half a pad left when I started pulling my other car apart I have heard bad story's over the ds pads and I can't get -50% off those lol , I would only use blank discs never groved etc as they skim off the pad with every turn of the wheel so makes more dust and lessons the life of the pad , I like to have a good pad at the pedal also now as I can't engine brake like I am used to with the 335 being a auto it's not quite the as coming into a round about too hot and dropping it into 3rd and the engine doing some of the work for me lol |

If it was me I'd leave the rear ones standard disc/pad and use the standard discs with DS2500's on the front...
Follow this link... http://www.ferodoracing.com/catalogu...cat=brake_pads Put in our car into the search and at the bottom it lists a different pad for the 335i (doesn't mention the 335d but apparently the same) this is the FCP1628 Which ties into this where it lists that part number for 335d.. http://www.srbpower.com/products/FER...%252d2011.html Which are available cheaper in other places.. http://www.camskill.co.uk/m49b132s40...500_Brake_pads What think? Worth a punt? |

Not much.
But the discs are CRAP. I have a little experience of them on this setup too. Yellowstuff is quite good at its price point. The OP needs new discs, maybe new front hubs too would be my reccommendation.

If only someone knew a way to fit the bmw performance brakes to a 335d, £420 is a bargain for them compared to uprated disc and pads.
Have you considered the ac schnitzer, I heard they are suppose to be good and approved by BMW |

I have heard of poor quality but was a result of being offshored somewhere cheaper. Now it's back where it started and things are back to their best. Having said that I'd always take OEM discs over aftermarket due to the quality of material used. The quality of the discs has always been very good it's just the other parts that let the brakes down on a lot of BMW's....
