I had that issue when I 1st got my car and then started to fill my cup about 3/4 full so that when turning or hitting a bump it would not splash out of the top.
I have NO interior issues with my ride, besides the normal creaks, rattles, pops, etc... my issues are external.

I think the cupholders are fine, nothing much to complain about...but I still think the E46 had the better design with them in the middle. When you have both out, the passenger space does get a bit cramped...also, I heard from a few service dudes at BMW dealers that many of them come in because taller passengers accidently bumped their knee into them and broke it......$220 to repair that peice of plastic.......now that's probably the only complaint

The cup holders in this car is terrible. It tips anytime you make a sudden movement with the car. I want the cup holders in the new X3. That's how cup holders should be made.

Germany has laws that don't allow people to drink, talk, text and generally be distracted while driving.
They put those cup holders in there to satisfy Americans. If the design isn't that of a Japanese or American companies, you know why. My wife's Honda Pilot has literally like 12 cup holders and nothing will ever spill in them. But it's an SUV designed for hauling kids around that are eating McDonalds and juice boxes. Germans are focused on driving, not eating/drinking, watching TV and having 3-way cell phone calls while smoking a cigarette and texting. With that being said, I like the cup holders and have had no issues whatsover.

hey now! rt 44 diet cherry limeades fit perfectly in my cupholder!!!
honestly, they're not too bad. I am glad there is no hole in the middle of my console since they look like ass and crap just collects in there and as someone pointed out it becomes a trap for clutter (not that I clutter my car). I did have a starbucks cup (95% empty though) fly out the weekend I got the car on a trip to boston after going over a big bump. I always cringe when my dad gets in the passenger side though that he'll accidentally open it with his knee and then break it. he should work in quality control at BMW!! I'd rather have bimmer spend more time refining the AT in the N52 cars!!!!

If U.S. wasn't so fat, and ridiculous, the cup holders would be fine.
If you go to a drive through: Get the Regular size drink. Don't get the 55 gallon drum of Coke. It makes a big difference to your cup holder and your belt.... Also, my father who has owned only American cars for the past 30 years was very impressed by the cup holders. I thought he would hate them. He likes that they don't 'slam' out, and they are in a good position. "Who would have thought..?"

Having gone from an E90 without any complaints I now find myself back to the 1-series that look like they were meant to hold, at maximum, a skinny red-bull can. Brings me back to my E46 days - throwing up the center armrest just to put a second drink in and having all the change, EZpass, sunglass crash to the back in the upright position. Oh well...whatareyagonnado?

Most likely thing is that car makers will put trays in the dashboard and Americans will be eating three square a day in their cars. Sad fact is that, as things are now, if Americans drove more, they'd lose weight if only because they'd be eating less.

I don't have an issue with the cup holders as they have always secured my beverages just fine. Mind you I don't rip around while they are in use and have no plans of doing so.
Regular driving, stop and go, bumps etc... are no problem for me. |

Same here unless you're buying a giant drink there shouldn't be a problem.

So I had my first issue -- in three years -- with spilled drinks this a.m. Went to a Starbucks and bought coffee. Driving out of the parking lot, I went over a speed bump and a bit of coffee spilled out the top. I must have jinxed myself with this thread I started...just figures...

Without passengers, the cupholders work great. With them there.. be prepared for an accidental knee bump spill.

I'm with most people here that I don't drink and drive but that doesn't address the issue, in comparison to other cars, the bmw cup holders stink, bottom of the barrel. Since I, like many don't care about this feature we don't mind that they suck, but they do.
On a side note.. I don't think I've seen it mentioned yet is that if you have a coffee or bigger size bottle (gatorade) use the cup holders from the fold down rear console. They're a little bigger and absorb bumps (and hopefully not spills) better for coffee/teas. |

I don't do much comparison of completely unimportant things like cup holders, probably because nobody eats or drinks in my car. The occasional water bottle, with a cap, might sit in one, but preferably stays in a door pocket. If you're really concerned with the quality of cup holders, maybe you should consider a minivan...

Nothing wrong with them. Hold regular drinks for regular people just fine. Fat asses drinking gallons of coke and other sh*t like that might not be happy with them.

I find the issue is those plastic coke bottles don't fit nicely (they are 500ml up in Canada, so 16 oz in the US?) If you accelerate, they flop backwards and unload on the passenger. Cans work a lot better.
