I use Royal Purple HPS 5w-30 in mine, and she loves it. I have temperatures that can spike into the low 100's here in Jax.

That is the "german castrol" that everyone talks about. It meets the LL-01 spec that you need and is held in high regard for many different applications. I did a quick search in the N54 forum and didn't see any complaints.

i used to work in a shop and a hondas would come in and we would put 0w30. Under hot temps and on brand new cars with new crush washers, oil would thin out so much it would leak from the oil plug. Crazy. Seen it with my own eyes and couldnt beleive it. Plug was Torqued properly and over tightened bc the customer demanded it.

My N54 loves this stuff. 6500 miles since last oil change and it's used less less than a half a quart under hard driving conditions. it would burn a full quart with the oem oil under easier driving conditions. However, a BMW field engineer stated to me that it did not have as much detergent in it as the OEM oil, but isn't an issue if you do the 7500 mile change interval. As far as temps, seems fine, at least in mine that has the oil cooler. Have not seen anything abnormal at all even when pushing hard on a hot day. Caveat: your results may vary: While the N54 loves it, the M52 in the E36 hates it with a passion. Vanos and lifter noise like crazy until totally warmed up.

That oil is great. It has been tested to be more like a 40 weight oil at normal temps and it only thins out to a low 30 wt at high engine temps. Ran it in my sti and I run it in my n54 now. My last oil analysis showed that it still had plenty of life left after 10k miles.

I wonder what the best oil is for us N55 guys- we do have a more efficient VANOS and oil distribution system after all. So efficient in fact, that some of our VANOS bolts can shear right off under certain conditions
