this is the thread that is going to start out flaming me just like the poor mans m3, but in the end, there is a 75% chance it might stay that way.

WRONG about the paper clip holder.

I'm half tempted to try this as well. i have a broken proclip holder and the "y" iphone cable already with power and aux, i'll keep and eye on your project and might try it out myself.

ill have a full DIY posted if this mold that i'm trying to make works. if not, ill have to try again!

but anyways.. i called spec dock to see how much they would sell me the plastic piece for..

they wanted 100 dollars for a piece of plastic.

so far, here is my running tab:

bondo- 10 dollars
cord- 9.98

thats only 19.98 and i don't plan on buying anything else. i have the iphone 3gs dock adapter so i don't need to buy that either. but if you don't have it, its another couple bucks. ~25 bucks for a DIY > 150 for spec dock.

it must have been a lot of money that they want 100 dollars for it. thats ALOT of money for a PIECE OF PLASTIC.

its a great product and design, don't get me wrong. i never said anything bad about the product. the man i spoke to seemed so happy when he told me how much a new piece was.

Spec.dock, like many others, is a company simply producing a product for consumers in order for them to truly enjoy their vehicles. They could sell it for $100 but after lease space, materials, and production costs, they would not be able to survive (especially in this economy). I've spoken to both of the founders of Spec.Dock and by no means are they getting super rich on their products. You won't see a Ferrari in their garage from all the income they are making out of this. They just enjoy making quality products for people and their cars. Like I stated before, they hope to reduce the cost of their docks as soon as sales increase. It's a shame to bash a company for trying to make a decent living.

I have nothing against their operation, but here are the facts, nothing hidden. Additionally, I couldn't care less if they are making 100% or 10% on each unit sold. It is not my business, and I do not care to know.

I had no intentions of purchasing this dock from Spec Dock. I planned on doing it entirely on my own. I figured I would give them a call to see how much the plastic insert costs, so I wouldn't have to waste time making the mold like I am doing now. The man I spoke to didn't seem to care much, and offered me the kit for 100. I did not want the kit, just the plastic. He refused to sell me the plastic piece for less than 100 dollars, which is INSANE, and you can not argue that.

I did not make this thread to put a company to shame. I am simply going to provide an alternate solution to the current product. With that said, if anyone else who owns a spec dock or works for them has an issue, they are welcome to contact me privately.

Are you making the whole piece out of bondo? Why don't you use some mdf...easy to sand/form. Use bondo to make it snug. Thats my plan.
