Additional oil cooler options in the UK for the 335i.

I've given up pretending I can stop spending money on mods for the car, so might as well go all out and get everything I want on the car done.

One thing I'm very interested in exploring is the option of an additional oil cooler for the 335i. I'll never track the car, and rarely push the car any where near its limits but given how quickly the oil-temp climbs I'm quite keen to explore what cooling options they are available for the the 335 in the UK to keep the oil temp under control, I wonder if anyone has experience of any of the following...

1) BMW power kit, comes with a larger fan and additional water cooler. Explored the option of fitting this ages ago but my local dealer were hopeless, but I notice Birds now offer it.

2) AR design kit, looks nice, but need to pay a fair amount to get it imported and fitting wouldn't be straight forwards.

3) VK kit, similar price to the AR kit but looks easier to fit, but not so good reviews.

4) Leave it alone (The sensible option), since I never push the car to any where near its limit .

I already have a Forge intercooler, and AR downpipes on the car.

You clearly don't need it. Save your money for more useful/exciting mods...

Why do you need one??!! I had a forged IC and the extra cooled IAT actually lowered my oil temp a little. Infact i never had a limp mode no matter how hard i drive the car. You should be looking if you are planning to run stage 3? For stage 1-2 you don't need it. Focus on other area's first man!

Forget about it. When you really need one you will find the solution maybe even custom.

I'm going custom with an external thermostat and Setrab Core. Even pushing my car really hard I don't see temps above 120degrees. These DI engines run much higher oil temps than normal cars for thermal efficiency.

Alpina do a retrofit OC into the opposite front wheel arch to match existing OEM.

Dealers or Indy's will fit Alipna parts.

I was thinking about this the other day, at what temp should you look to clam down and let oil temp cool when pushing it. Over 120 or higher?!

I think in reality I really don't need a bigger cooler, its just un-nerving to see oil temp getting close to 120 in hot weather and just cruising....plus I'm fast running out of bits to change for the car

Didn't know about this will have to have a look. Both the VK and AR items seem to have compromises, an additional oil cooler in conjunction with the existing looks like a good option.

You may like one of these BMS Low Temp Thermostats:

http://www.burgertuning.com/low_temp...W_135_335.html

Maintaining higher oil temperatures reduces emissions at the factory power levels but puts your engine cooling at a serious disadvantage at higher power levels. This simple device lowers your oil temperatures by bypassing the factory oil cooling thermostat and allowing oil to circulate through your oil cooler full time. The result is dramatically lower oil temperatures and more consistent engine performance. Engine oil warm-up time is only marginally increased. Installs in minutes and is fully reversible.

The Burger Motorsports low temperature thermostats are CNC machined for a precise fit. Anodized red for protection. Engraved with the BMS logo. Made in The USA

I've had one of those in my car for the last week or so. I also have the BMW Performance steering wheel so I can monitor oil temps right from startup. I've noticed very little change in the speed the car warms up and peak temps have been reduced by 3 degrees.

Cheaper than a 1000 euro additional oil cooler from Alpina.

Evolution Racewerks do a replacement cooler which is highly recommended though.

An oil temp of 120 degrees Celsius is nothing to worry about at all. When you're getting past 130 I would start thinking about a bigger oil cooler; otherwise this does not really seem necessary. It all depends on how you drive your car - if it is tuned and you frequently go on a track with it, an additional oil cooler is certainly a good option. Otherwise there are certainly other mods that make more sense in daily driving...

The VK option does not exist any more, that company has been out of business for years.

And I wouldn't recommend the AR Design that much - it certainly helps a bit, but replacing the OEM oil cooler with a bigger core - similar to what idnan and myself have done or what Evolution Racewerks is offering - is IMO a much better option.

Hi, My car got the engine fault light and reduced power on Saturday.I was driving from Peterborough to Milton Keynes at standard speeds as I had the whole family in the car but with the aircon on all the way. Just as I got into MK, doing about 30 - 40mph at that point, the light came on and the power got cut...

I noticed that the temp gauge was reading 120 C.

As soon as I stopped and turned the car off and then back on the code cleared and the power was ok again but cant understand why it did it in the first place.

As mentioned before by Yoro35i if I get a better intercooler that should help reduce the temps right ..?

Also the BMS Low Temp Thermostat mentioned by phil200tdi appears to only be for 2007 cars onwards according to the website so will this fit my Nov 2006 335i..? and is it worth me getting that..?

My car has a JB4 and K&N panel filter but thats it as far as modifications go.

Thanks.

Worth reading the codes, might have been something else.

As mentioned in earlier posts, 120C is perfectly normally. The limp mode was most likely caused by something else.

without checking any of the codes as I'm at work at the mo.. Could a problem with the battery result in this..?

I only say that as when I sit with the car off but radio on after about 30 seconds I get low battery working and then it turns off completely.

Also can I check the codes with the JB4 usb cable..? or is that checked via the ODBII port..?

Yes

Read the codes with the JB4.

No codes.

Must have been a glitch at that moment..?

Thanks for your help and sorry for the hijack but I thought this may have been temp related and ultimately require more cooling of some type.

will have to monitor this and see if it happens again.

I may just stick a new battery in anyway as I'm sure its not supposed to say low battery after the car has been off for 30 odd seconds with just the radio on...?

Hi All,

Sorry to drag this thread back up but although my car hasn't had another engine fault light come on I just checked it for codes again and its now showing 2FD3 and 0FF3 from the JB4 software.

Does anyone know what these refer to..?

Thanks

Emailed Terry got this reply:

Sorry, neither of these codes are in our listing. I'm not sure what they refer to.

I think I'll just clear the codes and hope for the best.
