amazing job.... wondering how it would look to have a car stickered with matte black.... i've seen it in show cars before and i think it would be sick to do that

I did this back in 2005 on the black trim of my E46 to have it match the rest of the TiAG. Looks great in person, you can't tell at all. The kidney grill I did was the first part, I was still learning how to do it so you can see some seams, but towards the end of the job I had all of the trim around the car done perfectly.
Only problem is that if a big rock hits it, it can tear and then you have to put a patch on it.

I don't like that idea at all. Your car and craftsmanship is near flawless and I give plenty of credit for that but I am a paint freak. I don't like the idea of anything that covers paint for that period of time. I used to detail cars and that would be a nightmare 3 years down the road. Somebody already stated that the paint may have trouble breathing. I believe German cars have softer paint because of their laws for paint having different VOC's. I wouldn't want that paint being covered up.

anyone have hookups in ny or US on how or where to do this?
i have a tacoma that is lifted and i'm ready to do the front end conversion and paint... but i honestly would rather have a flat black or sparkle grey color done with this stuff since the tires stick out so much and kicks up crap, what do you guys think?

No offense, but I think that's ridiculous and tacky. Protect your paint for 3-4 years? Of course it will...none of your exterior paint is exposed! So, for 3-4 years, you drive around with a car covered in tape?

Looks great in my opinion....If my car were white, the roof would def be carbon fiber....
I'm leaving my car Jet Black, but would definitely like CF on my roof to match the CF front lip and rear spoiler that I want.....

LOL at the comments. This isn't anything new and has been around for years. We did it to some cars for SEMA back in 2001 (I'll have to dig up the pics) and it came out looking flawless.
Regardless, whatever 'gloss' color tape/foil/vinyl you use, it's not going to have that much depth as say a good 2-stage paint job. But then again, the BMW's use a single-stage paint setup so the paint & clear already doesn't have much depth to begin with, regardless how much people polish and think their cars look compared to others. Unless you apply more clear and color-sand & buff it, it won't give it that nice deep glassy look. My friend did that to his jet black E46 by sanding it, and applying 3 more coats of clear and color-sanding & buffing it. It seriously looks like glass on wheels. And no, there are no differences in paint jobs or quality for each manufacturer when painting a particular model car for different areas of the world. And all paint is cured when delivered to the dealership so no 'breathing' is needed. IMO, when doing something like this it's good to stick with dull colors like matte black because it looks more realistic on the car. And to the person saying you can see bubbles and wrinkles, if you apply it right then you won't see a damn thing. It's like tint on a window, first few days you see some bubbles until they dry out and then it's completely smooth. The OP gets an 'A' for effort & for being different, but I'd do it for other reasons. |
