To be honest, you cant compare any car on the road these days as you dont know if its tuned, especially turbo cars. Most performance hatches (all VXR's), Focus ST/RS, Golf GTi, Seats, Skodas, Scoobys, Evos, etc etc etc, can all be tuned cheaply.
So if you are racing one of these and it beats you - how do you know its not been tuned? Last edited by dopper99; 11-18-2011 at 09:07 AM.. |

My Mate has a 400hp Evo 5... Very very close, but i ALWAYS took him in 3rd gear... and i was gone by 4th.
I just have a stock car with 18" rims and a JB4 Tune. My 335i stock was not that quick, but with the JB4... It is very rapid! The torque of these motors is great and 3rd gear is a golden gear for them i believe! |

Very true...never going to be an exact science for that very reason, but just thought it could be a good discussion topic.

Needs a tune otherwise you'll get your ass handed to you by e36, e46 AND current m3s.
With a tune only, just the current M3 will leave you. With bolt ons, well... Say no more.

As others have said there are too many variables. The driver probably being the biggest one.
A good example of this is that on the How Fast link posted by Mega a standard RS5 is at number 14 and the closest standard e90 M3 is at number 44 at exactly 5 seconds slower. I'm pretty sure the Top Gear test was the other way round when they used the same driver. In any case there is no way there is that big a difference between them. Audi S3 you will beat, Mapped for mapped, you will beat too.. Same for TTS also, S5 you will just keep up with stock, tuned you are gone. Goft Gti, being FWD with 350HP is a monster rolling.

for what it`s worth(not a lot), here`s my ten penny worth. had a battle with an S3, the guy cut me up badly and thought it was funny. shouldn`t have risen to the bait i know but.... he could not escape, and i was driving in DS.
do find hard driven GTI type cars can give you a run for your money. drove a TTS recently, same engine as S3, need loads of revs under 2.5k,quite disappointed actually, as 335i is effortless from tickover. had a 996 tip some years ago, no match for 335 torque in mid range. how does a 330d and 335d stack up aagainst each other? might look there next. all the best and enjoy that torque! |

S3 must have been tuned as a standard one would not keep up with a 335i.

Uhmmmm maybe I'm just really new to all the modifications but what kind of "tune" are you guys talking about? It can't be the BMW Performance (increases hp to 320), right? I just got my car about a month ago and still enjoying the 300 horses that came with it.

A 335i or 335d wouldn't feel so bad. Especially with a map.

Mines the 258 varierty which as you said is to be expected. The point I was trying to reinforce is as others have made is don't underestimate other cars that may be perceived as easy game. Mine looked pretty standard as well apart from some big brakes lurking behind the wheels...

You will only feel the kick after 4k rpm in the TTS ....but with 4 wheel drive and manual gearbox, it will get a head start on the 335i ....up to 50 mph ..... Good thing about the 335i is the torque from 1.5/ 2k rpm.... |

All good stuff guys, sort of an online "in the pub" conversation.
However, isn't it true that none of this means anything on the public highway, where the limiting factors are traffic, speed limits etc. etc.? Whilst on track, or a private runway this is all good fun, the fastest driver in everyday situations is simply the one that is prepared to break speed limits and/or drive like a lunatic the most. I can be easily "smoked" by someone who's willing to undertake on the motorway for example, or goes through a red light. Anyone who views other cars as a challenge, or who takes the bait and races on the highway is an accident waiting to happen. Right, boring old git reality check over, carry on.................. Mike. |

Jumping red lights & undertaking on the motorway is a little different to enjoying hour driving mike.
