Should i be worried?
Just bought a e92 320i M sport 58 plate, 15,000 on the clock.
Pick it up next week, was a bit curious as why it had soo little milage for 15 grand. So took out extended warranty, after reading the forums im seeing the 320i probly wasnt the best choice, should i really be that worried? |

What do you want from your car?
What criteria did you have set out?

I dont quite get what you mean I want a car that will last me the 3-5 years with minimal repairs/faults.
I only do about 8k a year so it isnt mega miles either, but reading here the 320i engine isnt the best =/ Speed isnt a factor, i have a remaped corsa vxr atm, so i've had my fun with a fast car looking forward to cruising. |

320i will do all of that fine.
I know nothing about the engine details other than i's a 4 cylinder petrol engine. It'll be fine, nothings gonna go wrong with it, it'll be relatively smooth... It's better than the 318i and better than the 320d for reliability. ( imo)

Only thing that i couldn't understand was why the milage was so low for the price, 15kmiles , £14999 for a m sport seemed cheap for me=p even though it was from Arnold clark. I'll just put it down to the dealership not knowing prices too well untill im proven otherwise i guess! |

Well from this I suspect you know nothing about the 320d. this engine is so much better in all respects over the 320i more power, more torque, less fuel consumption, cheaper to service and much more fun to drive. sorry for the OP but yes ! you bought the wrong car, nothing wrong with the 320i just that it is not going to be the ultimate driving machine you want.

Well if its the saloon then its the usual price...it trades in at bang on £13k The coupe trades in at £14k...
So it wasn't a bargain as such, was just a going rate. So no need to worry it was the going rate :P As I said, depending on the options, not much is really going to go wrong in, coupled with the fact you can get relatively cheap BMW parts and with the fact BMW engines are so easy to work on that you'll be fine. Even on my engine, theres not much to go wrong. And also, you have an extended warranty, wtf is wrong with you, relax matey ! :P

Oh jesus, here we go, 320d brigade in.
More fun to drive? Really? I mean really? Lets not forget the turbo, swirl flaps, EGR valve, vacuum pipes, pressure converters etc oh and also the bag of spanners noise in the morning. 11k a year and he should have gotten the 320d... Not going to be the ultimate driving machine he wants???

I had a 320i from new and there was no problem with it. Whilst understanding the 320d is a better engine in some ways to say it's better to drive is a difficult point. As well as being much lighter the 320i engine loves to rev and is much more involving than the diesel even if it ultimately does not produce as much output.

The 2 litre petrol is a much nicer engine than the diesel, so don't worry about it.
Remember, many petrol owners don't do many miles, they buy the petrol as they want something that is refined and not worried about ultimate power and trying to save a couple of quid each week on fuel, so the mileage is not that strange. You could call BMW UK with the reg and ask for history on it, then if it has been in at BMW all its life you could use that as an excuse to back out of the deal, if you felt you had made the wrong choice. |

Yes, a great engine if working properly.

320d is far more reliable than a 320i.
Good luck with the new motor mate!' I hope your one is reliable!!

Thanks for the info guys. Going from a 240bhp small corsa to this, will take some getting used too, will miss the turbo=/ and the noise!
I'm getting its first service/Mot done before i pick it up so hopefully no problems. Also should i keep an eye out on the alloys? It has the upgraded 19"s with the runflats on them =/ |

Been on here nearly 5 years. 320i is pretty problematical, the OP has seen this himself when doing his re-search. 320d is reliable in comparison with it.

My better half bought a year old 320i a few months ago with less than 10K miles on it, it drives beautifully, is silky smooth and she is seeing 38mpg in mixed driving to and from work etc. The same dealer now has a 320d that is a few months newer but has done a few more miles and the spec is identical, that car is £7k more than she paid for hers. Don't worry about the 'should have bought a diesel feeling' you have bought a lovely car, enjoy it, she loves hers.

Is that a statistical fact, or more forum influenced?
I see the latest N47 diesel is not getting top marks, with timing chain guide and crank issues, so where are we going with reliability on this one? Never mind the well documented M47 issues. Sure there are issues with the valvetronic petrol engines, but in percentage terms, no idea of what is most reliable, in 'fact'. HighlandPete |

Driving just 8k miles per annum, the petrol is likely the best suited to it, particularly if the trips are quite short. HighlandPete |
