Took my car to the track on Friday. JBD installed at 100%. Best run was 8.8551 @ 81.18 mph. I got a 2.0853 60 ft time, so not horrible. Most runs were pretty close to this. 8.9-9.0 sec and 80-81 mph. Did have some problems launching. I turned DSC off completely, M2 in sport mode, revved to 2000 RPM and it still had some lag on launch. Tried launching at 2500-2800 and it did this weird thing where the RPMs just started winding down. Once it got close to 1200, it would go back up and the tires would break loose (if I floored it). It was very odd. Had a friend who is a mechanic take it on a run or two and neither of us could figure out what was happening with the launch.

So I looked up a basic conversion and an 8.85 usually yields a 13.7 or so 1/4 mile. I guess I just expected it to be closer to 13 with the JBD at 100%. I had a 2001 Trans Am (325HP) and I ran a 13.0 @ 108 stock.

I know I need to get it to the 1/4 mile track to get a real ET, but it closed Friday due to rain in the area so I'll have to take it when I get a chance to figure out what the actual 1/4 mile time will be.

Anyway, just thought some of you might have some suggestions or similar stories on the launch issue. I am open to any information anyone has on that or times you have ran. I am starting to consider getting an ECU tune instead of the JBD, but not sure if it is really worth all the extra money.

trust me JBD is good product but I have RENNtech which is bench flash if you dont mind spending money on a REPUTABLE company then so be it. You get what you pay for. Its is not easy to just plunk out money but In my case I can and also have been using RENNtech for over 10 years now on my defunct 02 MCS and now the 335d, so think hard and wisely whom you decided to take, with Terry all I had to comunicate was through email no phones unless that has changed with RENNtech I just call Lenny, there is another company but forgot their name I think they bench flash also

Thanks for the good info. I browse around here a lot trying to get a good idea of what options I have. I am pretty impressed with TDIwyse's setup, but every time I try to duplicate others results, I seem to do worse. I do hear good things about the Evolve tune though. I don't know anyone besides you with the RENNtech tune, but I will research.

Well then accept the fact that you're drag racing a diesel and as a result you'll never be competitive with THAT car for the $$ you want to spend.

From now, we have no evidence that the RENNtech produce more power than the JBD.

There were diesel trucks out there smoking Mustangs and Camaros left and right. I saw a couple running 6.9 sec ET's. I never said I needed a 10 sec car anyway.

Either way, I posted here for help, not for people to tell me to go get another car. There are people with the same car as me getting the results that I want so I know my goals are obtainable without buying some POS Mustang. I traded my 2010 2SS for this car.

I only have the JBD and the stock run flats. I plan to replace wheels and tires since I know the run flats are heavy, but I have to read my warranty info as I purchased the 5 year wheel and tire package and want to make sure what ever I choose is covered.

Ditching those runflats will make for a much better ride. I wouldn't get too frustrated since your car is pretty much stock. An LSD would do wonders on the track as would suspension work.

Some tracks are a lot faster than others. So you'd compare to your times when running factory stock for example. At sea level I've heard of high 12s / low 13s with the JBD in place. And mid 13s stock.

So my track is 650 feet above sea level, which I believe means I can subtract a tenth (for every 600 feet above sea level). So it is still calculating a 13.6-13.7. I assumed I would get high 13's stock and lower 13's with JBD. I'll see what happens at the 1/4 mile track as soon as I can get there. I will be taking my tools to remove the JBD this time and I'll compare stock to JBD.

I thought you could just turn down the JBD to its lowest setting and that would be considered stock. Is that not right?

I can't comment on the BMW approved wheel part of your question, but I am zeroing in on APEX ARC-8 as my lighter weight summer wheel. It is about 2-3 lbs lighter than my OEM wheels.

I believe the lowest setting is like 20% or something like that.

I hate that our cars lose power up top. Also, try shifting early, like under 4500rpm to take advantage of peak horsepower and then get some torque off the shift.

^Its all about driving YOUR car. YOUR car is a diesel and the optimal shift point for most gears is a little above 4,000rpm. Rotory guys always complain about having no power below 4krpm, but this is because the power band is roughly 4200 to 9000rpm. Shift at 8800 on an rx8 and you'll be in heaven.

To OP, why do you need bmw approved tires/wheels, but its ok to run your car at a drag strip? Why not just change the wheels for e event then change back?

Btw, your transam weird roughly 3500lbs (vs 3800) and had 275s (non-rft) in the back on 17s which were probably lighter than your 3s wheels. Probably had a five-speed as well, thus (assuming you are launching in second) you are probably about even there. Power/weight and traction are some good places to start, but most of all, practice. I expect poor times my first time out...never been a drag-racer, but I'm always willing to humbly learn.

PR, honestly, I a dying to know because it will weigh into a decision which I have coming down the pipeline...what kind of 1/4 times are you seeing with the RENNtech tune?
