Does anybody know if it's possible to remove the ash tray ('09 e90) and replace it with the cubby style tray that comes in the 2011's? I've seen the sunglasses tray mod I'm looking to retrofit the 2011 style cubby.

I would like to know this too, I'd just hate to loose the cigarette lighter as I use that to power my radar detector haha

You still have one in the armrest but yeah, i think most people do the opposite of what i'm asking. Further research has led me to believe that it's not an '09 thing. Its the removal of the smokers option is what I'm thinking of

Go to the DIY area and look for the sunglass holder diy. It just removes the ashtray and cig. lighter, and makes a big storage area with a lid just like it has stock. You can get the parts from Tischer for like 40$ or something.

Yup. You need the "Oddments Tray". It's like $40. You just pull the shifter knob off, disconnect a few wires, pull the center console trim off and remove the screws holding the ashtray in. It takes about 10 minutes. I have a 2007 and it fits fine.

I hate my cubby. Too small to put anything useful in and looks cheap compared to the covered ashtray I had in my '06 330i.

Thanks, yeah I saw this mod....but what I was looking for was the cubby that does not have the lid...It's bigger.

It's definitely a trade off. Right now however my issue is that I don't have anywhere to put my cell or sunglasses....side door pocket is my only option

The oddments tray is an open cubby tray with no lid, i did it on my 08 E90 and drilled holes in the side facing the shifter and mounted the lights that were used on the ashtray.

Any good sunglasses aren't going to fit regardless, mine go in their hardcase when I'm not wearing them and then in the glovebox. My cell phone I just open the ashtray lid and put it in top of the phone first. (iPhone4). Sticks out but doesn't go anywhere, and doesn't interfere with gear changes.

It is called the Oddments Tray. Part Number 51169198283. You also need part number 51167118065. That's the rubber insert that goes in it. The tray is $29 and the insert is $9. I agree that the sunglasses tray is useless. It is too small to fit anything. The tray is big enough for a wallet, cell phone, or glasses.

Is it an auto? If so it is simple. Grab and pull straight up as hard as you can. Try not to punch yourself in the nose or punch your rear view mirror off!

Was looking at some site the other day for some sort of retrofit for sunglasses. Saw 1 that replaces the drivers handle bar. Looks cool in the pics but then I thought damn these cars or so space-deprived. Lol

That's what I have. I took the trim off of the original ashtray and put in on this one (perfect fit, but be careful as the plastic tabs holding the trim are hard to bend and easy to break). It looks identical to stock but now has a useful space for sunglasses!

Also, to those of you that complain about loss of power source. The ashtray plugs into a 3-lead socket right in front of the shifter. After you remove it you could still cut/modify the plug and tap into that power to route it wherever you need. You don't have to lose it!
