As u all prob know since hurricane sandy theres been a gas shortage in the north east, all that is available is 87 can i mix like 3-5 gallons in with the half tank of premium i have left?? Would that be ok to do? Or would that be a bad idea? I want to mix it now while i still have some premium in the tank, any responses are greatly appreciated

BMW specifically says premium. I believe. I really don't know, but I am sure you will be fine, but the car may be rough idles and throwing some timing.

If you have to, I wouldn't get on it and drive like a grandma.

5 gallons of 87 would be approx. 90.7 octane. with your 8 gallons of 93.

Which I run 91 here in Cali all day long. without my tune.

Couple things:

1. Consider a new SIG (I get the message, it's not coming out right)
2. If you have a tune & you NEED to fill up, take it off or put it on it's lowest setting
3. AVOID at all cost running straight 87. Even if you can get your hands on 91, that'll be significantly better than 87
4. Try to buy some Octane Booster (AutoZone) to keep your gas as close to 93 as possible

Otherwise, just try to avoid driving your car. Luckily the powers starting to come back in a lot of places so getting gas might be getting back to normal over the weekend/next few days.

Where are you?? Im in long beach and no where around here has 93, ive waited for days and only 89 and 87 has been available, now theres only 87

To every one else that responded thank you, but I already mixed in the 2.5 gallons of 87 with the half tank of 93, my cars completely stock now, i have no tune, or any thing and my lease goes back in february so im pretty sure 2 gallons of reg gas wont hurt it and if it does its bmws problem in february, also i cant drive fast theres too much debris, trees and down power lines in the road also theres traffic lights out, it wouldnt be wise to speed around here now

On the + side this cars extremely fuel efficient when driven conservatively ive been able to get around and only use half a tank in the last week and a half since the storm

Bmw called me back finally and said owners manual says if only 87 is avail its ok to use that the car will automatically retard the timing but to fill up on 93 asap

87 will be fine. The DME will just pull timing if it needs to. I would post a disclaimer that you should baby the car, but honestly I don't even think that's necessary.

Car will totally compensate for 87, just will make less power as it will pull timing, but won't cause damage, just run it and get some 93 when you can. Also, do not go to autozone and buy octane booster and dump that in - that potentially is much worse than just running the straight 87.

All dealer loaner 335's get 87 all day long everyday as no one pays the extra to put 93 in them and they all survive just fine!

91 octane is recommended, but not required. The ability of 87 octane to ignite at a lower temperature may actually even be ideal under light-load situation's to reduce fuel consumption.

As most of the guys here are saying. 91 is highly recommended but not required.

I would baby the throttle, and not get on it as much on 87. It will retard timing, and you will gain less power per % on throttle input. Trust me, same feeling as if you get a batch of bad gas, you'll feel like you're making less power, and need more input for the same amount of power on good gas.

Im sure you can drive 5-10 miles for 93.... If not put in diesel...its good for the car sometimes...seriously dont

What's all this about keeping octane as close to 93 as possible? Where I live, 93 octane isn't exactly easy to come by.
