Unlikely, but easy to test. Jack up that corner and grab the wheel. Try and rock the wheel back and forth (as if trying to make it turn left to right). If there's significant play then it's tie rods. On a new car like this though it's pretty doubtful.

a couple of months ago I had some bad clunking going on my front passenger side suspension once I installed some H&R springs, and after inspection at the dealer, it turned out to be a bad shock (strut assembly)....they went ahead and fixed it.
fast forward, and a few days later I just said screw it and put some KW V2 coilovers, and all was well. About a week or so ago I started to hear a slight clunk again, on both sides but more pronounced on passenger side. it's not as bad (no multiple clunks as I go over a slight bump, just a single clunk) as before, but nonetheless it has been getting louder with time! I checked the top of the struts (3 bolts from engine bay), and they are tight. I checked the strut links, and seems tight. what else can I check? what can be causing this clunking? The coils are not even a month old, so no way this is a busted shock on the coil, is it? I mean, it's not like I went to the track or went over bad bumps!

the tech at the shop said my left tie rod was a little loose, but he's not sure if that's causing the problem. I'm not sure if its worth ordering a new tie rod end and having it put in when the problem still remains in doubt

Just to close the loop on the noise I reported earlier in this thread, Matt (itsbrokeagain, who of course is the only person you should see for suspension installs in the NY/NJ area!) found the problem this afternoon - somehow the driver's side sway bar end link had become loose and that was rubbing against something, causing the noise. Problem fixed by replacing and tightening the nut on the end link.

How many miles on your car? Hit anything bad with your wheels? Just seems like an awful early time for a tie rod end to go bad, but never say never...

I don't remember hitting anything bad, but there are some bad potholes here in San antonio. I had about 20k miles on my car when the noise developed.

I used to have that problem when they first installed my KWs. We figured out it was the top, stock, strut brace in the engine compartment the ones that go over the top of the shock towers. We loosened them and retightened and the sound was gone for good. Then it started clicking about a year later and I finally got the car serviced for its 21K and they replaced my brake pads, turns out it was loose clips for the pads.
Hope this helps out

WHAT about this SAME noise coming from a STOCK set up? Its 5 degrees outside and all but I noticed squeeky noise over small bumps, like speed bumps, and clunk noise mainly from drivers front side?
Thanks,

Your swaybar endlinks needs to be TIGHTENED and torqued to spec when the suspension is loaded. Meaning the car needs to sit on all 4 wheels when you tighten the link, otherwise stress on the endlinks once it sits down and loads will cause the ball-joints at each end of the link to come loose and clunk.
Also the LOAD on the link needs to be perpendicular to the ground, meaning that when the car is on the ground the link can not be more than 5 degrees off of the vertical axis. If it is, you'll need either a longer or shorter link to bring the bar back into the right geometry to provide a vertical load on the links. p.s.: The self-locking nuts on the factory swaybar endlink are at best one or two use only. Use new self-locking nuts when installing or use thread-locker if re-installing.

I have the KW's so this might be my problem also. I will have my friend look at it and see if it's the same problem. Happy to see that I'm not the only one.

This was happening when I bought my car from the dealer with aftermarket suspension. The tech drove the car and heard it when going over the speed bumps on the lot. He lubed up my swaybar bushings and it hasn't made a peep since then.
Good luck! |

Well i found out my stock swaybar bushings were bad, so they are fixing it with new bushings and hardware whatever that includes, for $214.00 then i have a 15% off coupon. So i guess its a fair deal...

Well Update, both sides of the bushings were replaced but BMWNA advised the Tech to look into rack n pinion steering for my steering wheel play that we ALL have at one time or another.
I will post and TSB or other info I get or make a new thread with it.

a few members in the Canada forum also have the same problem.
Do you think its because of the colder weather? I have the same issue, Dropped on FK silver line X's. After around 15K KM. I started to get a clunking noise from my front passenger suspension. Only on uneven roads/parking lots.
