Just bought my 2009 E93, 28K miles and no warranty (save for a 30 day 1000mi from the used car dealership). After reading about all the reliability issues with these cars, I'm extremely scared of owning this car with no warranty. Do any of you own without a warranty?

These cars got a lot of little issues that cost a great deal if brought to dealership and I'm pretty sure you want to keep bringing your car to be fixed by dealership professionals.....I got my aftermarket warranty for 3 years 3000$ and I had used 3000$ in repairs by the end of year 1....the bmw labor cost is killer. Which ever warranty you decide to go with just make sure they cover the full bmw labor prices.

The warranty will be a waste of money just save what you would be paying in a warranty premium, and put it in a savings account which can be used for repairs.

No warranty here, and good thing I did not get exended warranty. Till now I have not spent any money in major repairs at 110k miles. I would have been a waist of 2k dlls which I believe they quoted me once at the dealership.

Warranty is done on both the E8x and E9x.

No warranty on the E90. I'll fix most stuff myself or take it to an Indy.

As for extended warranties, they are effectively insurance policies. And the insurers are guaranteed to set them up so that they statistically cost each insured party more than that party will statistically get in return. Meaning you, as the buyer, are more often than not going to lose money.

You can purchase the extended CPO warranty that takes it from 4yr/50,000 miles to 6yr/100,000 miles... beyond that you're buying from a 3rd party.


To answer OP's question, I bought my with just a few months left on CPO, which gave me piece of mind for the purchase. I'm mechanically inclined so since that expired I just do all the work myself.

When I was looking into it, seemed to me that most people posting on this board about warrantees stated that they more than recouped the cost of the warrantee, but that simply won't be true for most people. Obviously, the warrantee providers set the premiums at a level that will, on balance across all holders, cover any payouts plus overhead plus profit. That means that most warrantee holders will lose money on the deal, relative to if they were to just pay out of pocket. If you have access to a good independent repair shop, and/or are willing and able to do some of the repairs yourself, you are even more likely to come out ahead. But if you are uncomfortable taking the risk that you will be one of the unlucky ones that have more repair costs than most, or don't have the funds to handle such an occurrence, then the warranty makes sense.

I usually keep cars on average 12 to 15 years.
If they will go longer I will do that to .

I used to do about 25k a year between two cars commuting
but now I am probably down to 12k.

I have a 96 Integra over 250k but it has a new motor.
I don't think I would do that on a BMW though.

no warranty. if i had extended, it would have covered about $300 in repairs for a belt tensioner. After going past 6yrs, 100k, I've had $1700 in repairs. Glad I didn't get an extended warranty, and I don't fear keeping the car.

To me it depends on the car. From what i have heard E93 cost a lot to fix if the top gets damaged so i would get a warranty that would cover at least that. Otherwise as long as you take care of the car and keep it well maintained you shouldn't have a problem.

My car was a CPO and the warranty expired in July. In the 3 years and 30k miles that I've owned it, I haven't needed the warranty much at all.

take it to the dealership when I want to find out what's wrong/address extended warranty issues (like turbos) and small stuff like oil change/alignment here and there

I'm mechanically inclined myself and actually prefer to do repairs myself because in my experience the average shop mechanic isn't looking up torque specs and going by the book on most repairs. I've always had trouble trusting someone else to do a job, do it yourself and you know it's done correctly.

The hardtop is definitely something to consider, I actually inspected it last night and found the tension cords are badly frayed and will need replaced, doesn't seem like too tough of a DIY though.

I'm a risk taker and prefer doing repairs myself, +1 for no warranty.
