N54 topping oil up every 2.5 months.

I don't drive hard and when I had the plastic gurds off when my DP was being installed, I noticed oil dripping from the point where the trans meets the engine.
Wouldn't this be tranny oil? Not engine oil?

I haven't seen any other points of leakage.

Where are the common areas apart from around the oil filter?

Check valve cover gasket or oil filter housing gaskets. That was the cause of my high oil consumption

Can you please give me rough estimates of cost for each of those.

I have searched and come across those common oil problems... But anything regarding my issue..
Where the block meets the tranny. Could I lose oil there?

Usually when I see oil at the bellhousing (where engine meets trans), it is coming from the oil filter housing or oil cooler thermostat gaskets. When these leak, the oil tends to run down the front of the engine to the oil pan rail, and eventually down to the bellhousing area.

Could also be the valve cover or even oil dripping out of the rear turbo inlet (excessive oil from PCV system), but the filter housing leaks are the most common based on my experience with these cars over the years.

Firstly. Cheers for chiming in

Sounds like you might have it spot on. I will have my Indy have a closer look when my front bumper goes on soon. I'll get them to take off the bottom panel and have a closer look.

It is an auto.

So, how much can I expect an Indy to charge and how simple is the job for the various problems if its either the :
Oil filter housing
Oil cooler thermostat gaskets
Valve cover
Rear turbo inlet.

Cheers mate!

No problem. Definitely get the splash panels off the car for a good look at everything. Chances are, you will find a fair amount of oil under the water pump area. Again, from the filter housing/oil t-stat areas.

As for labor, I don't have access to the BMW labor times or Alldata here at home. The filter housing and oil cooler t-stat gaskets should be done at the same time. The oil cooler thermostat gasket is really easy to change, but the filter housing requires partially removing the intake manifold to access one of the bolts. I'd probably expect a shop to charge at least 3 hours of labor to change those 2 gaskets.

If I'm at the shop later I'll see what the labor times list out at..........

Very helpful response! Many thanks!

So does the whole oil cooler housing need replacing or just a gasket once again?

No, just the gasket needs to be changed. Do you have a factory oil cooler or not? If you DO, then you will need 2 gaskets. WITHOUT the cooler, there is just 1.

With cooler, numbers 4 and 5: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...71&hg=11&fg=30

Without cooler, number 4 only: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...67&hg=11&fg=30

Obviously, you need to verify this is where your leak is coming from. It's the most common one I see on N54's, though.

mine had the same symptoms and it was the oil filter housing gasket. took it to the dealer and they replaced both gaskets. i think they charged me with 4 hours of labor.
