According to the China Car TImes, "Zhi Nuo" translates into "The Promise", which will be the name of a new joint venture between BMW and China's Brilliance car company.

They expect the new Zhi Nuo cars to be based on existing BMW platforms, namely the E90 3-Series. Chinese media are basing their reports on registration data about a new brand which was established jointly composited with simultaneously floating rumors about an E90 3-series and X1 platformed car to be used by a new joint brand. No official announcement has been made as of yet, but all eyes are on the upcoming Shanghai autoshow for more details.

BMW has apparently already revealed the plans for its sub brand to dealers in China in order to gain feedback on the idea and with a hint that they would try to sell the cars through an independent sales network.

Would this by any chance inflate or deflate the 'Original' BMWs value?

Not the best in the economic category.

Awesome.

In 5 years they will export these all over the world and take away BMW's market share.

Brilliant idea by the bean counters.

It's really sad to see what BMW has become just in the name of profit.

You can make a profit by staying true to your values or you can make a profit by selling out. It's clear which one BMW has chosen.

Don't be surprised that the next step would be to have chinese manufactured components (by "The Promise") make their way throughout the BMW family.

Considering Brilliance copies BMW now, I cannot blame them for wanting to get in bed with them.

I'm sure BMW has some benifit otherwise they'd not be involved in such a venture.

This pretty much seals the deal on a new Mercedes once I'm ready to get rid of my BMWs. Mercedes has been doing some pretty good things: improving their quality, stayed authentic, and making great looking cars. They have also almost perfected the comfort and sport balance that BMW once had. Not perfect yet, but definitely more satisfying than a BMW is now. Who wouldn't want a new C350 coupe? Or a CL550 Sport?

Actually a good idea. Get additional revenue for old technology from 2005, and likely reduce the amount Brilliance copies real BMWs.

BMW is a company, they want to make money plain and simple. Would you want to run a business and purposefully turn down financial gain?

Strategy is simple = Sell old tooling for E9X Series to China instead of throwing it away.

It's a perfectly corrosive strategy to the BMW brand. Keep up the good work, corporate!

a separate brand name would probably leave the name "BMW" along
on the other hand, it makes a lot economical sense since Chinese auto market is becoming THE largest in the world, and most of the purchases would be compact cars or even smaller. Joint venture with a local company would eliminate a lot of political issues, if you know what I mean
Quality would always be "you get what you paid for." It's unfair to ask for higher quality when someone knows that there are higher quality but expensive products, and instead of spending the money, buys somthing off of ebay with a fraction of the cost, and amazingly expecting higher quality... and it just happens that it's made in China.
There are lots of top quality made-in-China products if you're willing to spent the money (hint: iPhone vs other plastic phones)

Important. Expected. Natural course of events. I hate it too. Not that it matters but I do.
