you weren't in your e90? This morning I was driving in the middle lane and to my right a truck breaks down. At 50 mph, the van driver behind him swerves to my lane, probably without looking. I slam on my brakes as hard as I could and they did an amazing job slowing the car down (first time ever I fully engaged the brakes btw) and averted what would've been a certain accident had I been driving a Toyota or something. Now, I'll just worry about cars behind me. Can you relate?

Yes. It's called driver skill. You must be skillful. I have avoided a serious accident and skipped back and forth in significant traffic at highway speeds- in my 2000 Honda Civic 10 years ago

Last month in September, driving up to Santa Barbara. My bf distracted me and told me to look at something to the right of us. Traffic came to a stop on the freeway and as soon as I shifted my eyes back to the road I had to slam my brakes. The honda behind had to swerve into the emergency lane to avoid hitting me because my car stopped so quickly.

I almost hit a deer a few years back on the highway doing 75 at night. It was 3 lanes and the deer was standing right in the middle where I was driving. The only thing I saw as I got close was the glowing eyes of the deer from my headlights before I swerved onto the next lane. The deer didn't bother running off till the last second and his rear was inches away from hitting my driver side mirror.

Happened to me just yesterday.
Guy flew up behind me on the highway and rode my ass. I moved over so he could pass, only to have him swerve in to my lane missing my bumper by mere inches, and then brake check me with a full on slam. Luckily I wasn't driving my 2001 Pathfinder and my e92 stopped on a dime, no collision. Went from about 80 to a near dead stop quicker than I could comprehend what had happened. My girlfriend kept saying "thank god you have quick reaction times." Just a friendly reminder to keep your brakes in tip-top shape!

I didnt avoid wrecking....but I did avoid death when I fishtailed and slammed head on into a concrete barrier at 75mph.
The car was so well built that only the steering wheel air bag deployed, and the front doors were able to open and I walked away without a scratch. The windshield didnt even crack. Im a believer in BMW now for sure. |

I was driving along a windy mountain road and fell asleep. While I was still asleep my 335i negotiated several hairpin bends and pulled over gently into a layby without waking me up, and even kept the heater on to keep me warm while I slept.

Yeah, it was my fault but my 335d got me out of it. A while back I was going a bit fast and approaching a stopped lane of traffic on an eight lane (four on my side) freeway. The lane to the left was clear, so I shoulder checked to see if there was a car on my left before I moved over into that lane.
I looked back and I realized that I had been approaching faster than I thought so I was almost at the rear stopped car. I had no time to stop, so I did a quick lane change just before I would have hit the last car in the stopped lane of traffic. The steering was so responsive, I must have missed the corner of the last car in line by a few feet, and I was going around 60 mph.

Not in my E90, but my mom had a bad experience in her F25 X3. She hit a deer in rural Indiana at ~75 mph. No airbags went off, radiator pushed back, hood crumpled. Kept her safe enough to keep driving to her destination without being stuck on the side of the road. Her previous daily was a 2010 Civic (after her 04 E83 X3 talked her into being more fuel efficient) that she had just traded in for the new BMW, and our family was all sure that the civic would've gotten her seriously injured and/or stranded if she hit the same deer at the same speed. I looked at Check Control to see if any errors came up when I went to check on her the next day, and EVERYTHING was fine. Not a drop of coolant spilled or anything. She's set on BMW for life now.

My car may not have the power to put a dollar bill from the dash to the back seat but if I hit the brakes hard enough it will put everything in my back seat in the front |

I have been hit three times in the back while driving BMWs. Just remember that the idiots on the road usually can't drive as well as you can, and can't stop as fast as you can.

it's all about awareness and driver ability. I've had a few close calls in other cars and have been able to avoid them. I do remember that my old integra was much more nimble than my BMW is, and would change direction much quicker, but the bmw is still quite good. I have also always had good tires and brakes on my cars, so I'm sure that helps.

I've had close calls in all the cars I've driven, it's nearly impossible to say one car vs another would have made the difference between accident or miss.
That said, both the stopping power and the going power of my car have gotten me out of tight spots on multiple occasions, for which I'm very thankful. LA has to be one of the few places in the world where you can go from 80mph cruise to a dead stop in near-panic-stop distance without ever having taken your eyes or mind off the road.

I guess the stopping power of the car could have kept me from rear ending someone but other than that, avoiding accidents is all about driver skill as others have said.

Situation awareness is a large part of avoiding accidents, and there's a lot of psychology behind this. You drive a decent car, and you take good care of it (some of you here, I would argue, are obsessed). You want to make sure you don't crash into anything, or anyone, if you can help it, and you're also constantly scanning for inattentive drivers around you. I know I do, but that's because I'm a Dad. I can be driving a rusty Pinto, and I would still be scanning to avoid idiots talking on the phone, texting, nodding off, etc.
E9x cars are pretty good handlers, and the brakes are impressive. However, I know that when you drive certain cars, or when you're in a rental car, there's a level of complacency that comes into play when you're behind the wheel. |
