HDMI Cable
Does the ebay stuff work as well as the Monster stuff? I am not paying $60 for a Monster cable...
What should I be looking for? Gold plate? 28 AWG?

go to
monoprice.com and buy HDMI cables there. I got "most" of my cables there and works just as well! I also have those 6ft $149.99 Monster cables and compared them side by side... seriously, I think these $3.99 monoprice HDMI cables work even better than those Monster ones. Be sure to get those gold plated HDMIs.

There are bettercables.com & bluejeanscable.com for some higher quality hdmi cable than monoprice. But yup stay away from scamster cable.

i have both Monster and generic...no difference in pic quality at all, not unless you're running 4x1080p(yes I've seen a 4x1080p screen, picture quality made me jizz my pants). Back to the subject...digital is different from analog, with digital you either have the signal or you don't. There is no loss of quality unless you're going to have a lengthy cable which is impractical for most home theater.

My little sis works for BestBuy and she showed me the actual price of monster cables and all I can say is the mark up is ridiculous. I bought some cheap cables from Lowes and compared it to the monster cables she gave me and I honestly couldn't tell the difference.

You can get the same or even better quality cables from monoprice.com .
I buy all my cables from them, and have had no problems. |

With traditional A/V cables, I think you could safely assume the quality of the lines made a difference (i.e. between Monster, etc. and generic). However, with HDMI and other "digital" cables, the signal is either "on" or "off" (1 or 0)... gold-plated and all that other junk shouldn't have an impact on the quality of the line. Meaning, a generic eBay HDMI cable (Monoprice carries good cables for good prices) should work equally as well as those $100+ supposedly superior cables.
There are small things to factor in I'm sure, but overall... no, no difference. Save yourself some monies =] |

I have some Monster cables but they are OK but they don't deserve the price tag what they carry. As for cables, yes they do make a big diiference. It all depends on what sort of equiptment you are running. |

As mentioned before, only buy monster if you can pick them up at wholesale price. A friend whose in the industry told me that they have the highest markup of anything that he carries in his electronics store.

Had a friend at Best Buy, and the warehouse price for almost all expensive cables is 3-4 times less the sale price (this also includes audio cables). Bought audio cables kit for ~$40 whereas sale price was around $120.

I had generic hdmi cables that worked fine for me when plugged directly between the source and TV. But when I added a receiver in the middle, sometimes they wouldn't all sync with each other.
I first replaced all of the hdmi cables with different generic cables, and the problem persisted. I then replaced them with cables from monoprice, and it worked fine. I think as long as you are getting a picture, the digital signal will look the same regardless, but if you are having some issues, or need a longer cable, the nicer cables (not monster) are worth it. |
