Lost another friend in a car accident

About five years ago, the son of a former business associate had just graduated from high school and worked part-time at a medical multispecialty group I was consulting with. Like me, and probably most guys his age, he had an interest in fast cars. We often talked about his dream of some day getting a WRX-Sti or Evol, but that from a practical standpoint, all he might afford was a Civic. I told him I would like to get a BMW 3 when my Exploder exploded.

He was a responsible kid, well-mannered, courteous, respectful, intelligent, and had other dreams, wished to pursue a health-related career, and asked me about becoming a doctor, registered nurse, etc.

I spoke to this guy's mom once or twice a year, and when he heard I had received my BMW, he continually egged his mom to visit me, and check out my new ride. That never materialized.

I just found out that he did become a registered nurse, got a brand new Honda Civic, and celebrated his 23rd birthday earlier this month. The photo taken of him in front of a candle-lit birthday cake would be his last.

Last week, I heard from a former associate that he sustained massive head injury when his car spun around on a freeway off-ramp then hit a tree with the rear quarter panel. His younger brother was saved by the passenger side airbag, but the front air bags never deployed (because of no front-impact). According to the younger brother, the car was speeding at about 90 mph. Left and right brain hemispheres were severed. This incident happened two days after his birthday.

I attended the viewing on Friday and the mom expressed that she should have honored his wishes of seeing me and my new car. I wish there were something I could have done or said that would have prevented this.

Thanks for the thoughts and condolences. I'm more concerned about the brother and mom.

As much as I love to drive and take corners fast, I post this mainly because whenever I play speed racer, events like this add to the collection of experiences that linger in the back of my mind and take away a few more thrill-seeking hairs off my back. If a few others felt the same way, incidents like this one might be avoided.

Sorry to hear about the accident. It seems he was a good young man and it's a shame his life was cut short. So sad.

sorry to hear that michael. i've had similar situations, I know a person who lost a limb, and one girl in my HS was decapitated when this guy i know's car spun out of control and crashed into a phone pole. I think she wasn't wearing a seatbelt. its really hard to not feel the need for speed at any age particularly when you're younger. Thats one reason I promise to never get a sports bike, because speed sometimes overcomes my rational side, and I'd probably go 160+mph if i had the chance. My friends younger brother was racing his car and he ended up getting into a crash that killed a couple people. He himself lost an arm, so I feel sympathy for him, also because I know him, but then hate to think what the other family must have gone through. Its a lose lose situation.

It's something that is hard to swallow, sorry for the loss, but I don't think that you should beat yourself up over this either. I really doubt that anything that you would have said could have changed the outcome. I just think that it's in our nature to think..."what if..." What if, I didn't go to the movie store, what if I didnt make a left instead of a right, what if I went to the bathroom before leaving the house, what if I didn't let that guy pass me up??? The best thing that you can do is use the outcome of this event as a memory of what can happen when you are "slightly" reckless on the street...you might feel like you and your car is in control, but can never count on that other person stopped on the side of the road, blowing the stop, the kid that pops out in between the cars, etc. Again, sorry for the loss

Michael, I am sorry to hear this. I too lost a friend in a car accident, who left a younger sister behind. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
