I'm going through about a half quart of oil every 1000 miles on my 08' Dinnan2 coupe. On the drivers side of the engine bay against the inner fender there is a yellowish plastic bottle with two ~1" black hoses going to it, the bottle as well as the lower hose are covered in oily gunk. I think this may be the source of my excessive oil consumption.

Is this common and how do I fix it? thanks

yeah pictures would help and how many mile are on your car. I have 76K and my entire front of the engine was covered in oil and I was putting in a quarter every few K miles, First, I have to say the oil was worn out in spite of what BMW says, I may have push it a little to long. Also I just changed the gasket on the oil filter housing, what a piece of crap rubber gasket, it was completely toasted and oil was leaking out all over the place.

I ended up pressure washing the entire front of the engine due to all the oil over it. Also I had to change my water pump that is why I did the gasket as well and I noticed lots of oil around the lines feeding oil to the turbos and you can see all the burn oil on the turbo. However I will tell you I never seen any smoke or any smells of oil burning. Considering how bad the gasket was leaking I was kind of surprise I did now have oil all over my garage floor. and there was very little on the plastic shield on the bottom of the car.

I am not sure if the oil on the turbos originated form the leaking gasket or from the feed lines, since there was oil all over the place. Now they things are clean I will keep an eye on it.

I bet you anything that you have some oil gunk on the metal housing that holds your oil filter. There is a rubber gasket inside that housing that needs to be replaced. I also have this problem and I have the gasket to fix it. The problem is, there are 2 main bolts to take the housing apart. One of those bolts is located underneath the end of the intake manifold. This means that the intake manifold has to come off before you can remove that bolt.

if your power steering is leaking get that fixed asap, power steering leak is a pretty big fire hazard since it can light just from coming in contact with a hot engine.

Hey, grab yourself a little mirror and look all around and under your oil filter housing. If that is leaking, it's a good chance the oil you see on the power steering reservoir is coming from the oil filter housing being sprayed/misted over it.
My steering res is also covered in soot and after I replaced the oil filter housing gasket, the soot on the PS went away.

If not, try a new cap or gasket the goes on the cap if possible.

I think it may be the oil filter housing, I noticed that was oily as well. The power steering fluid reservoir is primarily oily on the side facing the oil filter and it's a dark brown oil not what I would expect from power steering fluid leak.

Waiting for my Extended Protection warranty to transfer from the previous owner, would this be covered?

You mean valve cover gasket, right?

Oil leaks for this car is mostly around the oil filter housing and or your valve cover gasket (Not head gasket!). If you have the oil cooler (sports package) then you should replace the gasket there too (apart of oil filter assembly).

Mine was leaking at both the oil filter housing and the oil cooler attachment.
