MPG with Quaife??
I'm planning on installing a Quaife LSD in my '07 335i 6AT.
I'm wondering if any of you with the Quaife have experienced reduced MPG (normal/highway driving) since installing this LSD?? |

I dont see why it would change if you keep the same ratio |

At the risk of sounding like an idiot: with AWD there is greater drivetrain loss and lower MPG than RWD/FWD. It sort of strands to reason, doesn't it, that the LSD would have small effect on MPG? I think of an open diff as being 1WD and LSD as being 2WD -- is that an incorrect assessment?

There is a very small increment in additional friction, both from moving the internal gears and the slight increase in lubricant temperature. There is no appreciable change otherwise, no 1wd to 2wd effect, as an open dif is driving both wheels under most conditions.
I am more concerned with noise, although most quaife owners report things are pretty quiet. I still need to get mine installed, and get some audio via stethoscope.

I'm not an Engineer or Mechanic, but I thought additional friction or drivetrain loss, so to speak, might increase fuel comsumption. That's why I was curious if people have noticed an increase in fuel consumption.

About your/my noise concern: I've only heard gear whine once, and that was when I drove back to Tahoe from the Bay Area on a warm day. After having driven approx. 75-100 miles, I noticed a gear whine sound coming from the car upon acceleration. When I let go of the gas, the sound when away; when I accelerated I got the gear whine (not a major acceleration btw). I haven't heard the gear whine since during my short trips up to 20 miles. It's also pretty cold up here now. I can only assume the gear whine I heard was related to heat. Anyone else experience this with their Quafe LSD? |

3/4" and the Quaife seems to have broken in. I have to say LSD and a piggyback are the shits for upgrades on our cars, both give you a whole new ride, with KW's in 3rd. You will enjoy yours I'm sure.
