Miami Police Kill Unarmed Man; Handcuff and Intimidate Witness and Stomp his Phone

I know, I know, not another one of these "fuck the police" threads. I'm not usually a fan of such threads, but this seems a little bit above and beyond what I've seen in other videos posted here..

CNN Video:

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/vi...oting.cnn.html

For the record.. Some guy hits and injures a cop with his car earlier that day

Cops surround the car and unload their full magazines into the car. Man in car is unarmed.

Witness captures it all on video, and the police handcuff him and his girlfriend, get him on the ground, take his cell phone, stomp it and put it back into his pocket.

Police bring witness in for interrogation and take away his phone again. Witness manages to save his memory card by hiding it in his mouth during questioning.

Shitstorm?

he already hit and injured a cop with his car, doesn't that give the cops the right to shoot at him? we don't know what happened before this video started, so who knows. we should have the full story before raging at the cops.

by the way, you say 'unarmed' ...a car can be used as a weapon

I care very little for what happened to the man in the car. I care much more about 2 bystanders having a gun pointed in their direction. There is no justification for that.

You know the excuses are soon to follow. "You don't know how hard it is to do what we do!" I really appreciate the hard work and sacrifice of police officers. I do. However, officers are in a position with considerable authority and power. Acting irresponsibly is unacceptable. No matter what. If doing the job results in these types of actions, then they are unfit to be a police officer. Simple as that.

I hear it all the time, "This is an isolated incident. There are so many more good cops than bad ones." How come none of the other officers told him to put down his weapon? More and more I witness this unbelievable disconnect from society that most police officers have. It is most actually a "Us vs. You" mentality. When it is supposed to be Us + Cops vs. Criminals. It's really too bad.

Did the cops think the guy with the phone was gonna set off an IED? Why the hell did they pull out their guns on him? And why did they interrogate him? WTF is going on in this country??

Shooting the car was wrong, they should not shoot at a car unless they are in a life and death situation, the video shows they were all at a safe distance..

Pointing guns at the guy video taping was wrong, Im sure the black guy screaming will be making a lot of money, there is no law against "video taping the streets", But im sure he will have his share of "trauma" from this incident.

I googled some of the other links surrounding this incident and it is clearly a major shitstorm. As always, it appears that there IS more to the story, but this is bad for law enforcement's image. If for no other reason than the fact that bystanders were inadvertantly shot, this would be bad, but the fact that there was another shooting where no one was hit gives the impression of incompetence.

Without knowing all of the facts, it is difficult to tell what was justified and what wasn't, but it looks bad.

Yeah. One could argue though, did the police know that the "innocent bystanders" were innocent at that point in time?

... Yeah. They could. These aren't buffoons with fire arms are they? They are trained officers of the law, aren't they? This was a travesty. No way around it.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/06/0...f-defends.html

They miraculously found a gun in the car after 4 days of processing it.

Here's a choice quote...

"Four bystanders were struck by bullets. Three officers had minor injuries.

Noriega previously did not rule out the possibility that the bystanders were struck by police bullets."

The real problem is the event in the first place. That event is awful and absolutely ruins that entire weekend for anyone that actually lives there.

The driver of the vehicle probably had it coming. Based on what I have read so far, the cops were a bit excessive. But justified, imho. What happened to those who witnessed the cops firing on the car is simply unacceptable.

This is what happens when you give uneducated people (not always, obviously) power and weapons.
