well im finally about to get a bmw, i recently had a g35 and g37 and i really dont know much about the 335's and i was wondering whats the difference between xi and i? how much am i expected to pay for either one fully loaded?

The 335xi has the X-drive system, which is roughly equivalent to AWD. The 335i is a RWD car. For a lot of people (like me) an AWD car is seen as better in very snowy conditions. But I was told and I read in many places that a 335i with a good set of winter tires will do the job of keeping you safely on the road in winter. You can expect to pay a premium of about $3000 for the 335xi over the 335i.

I suspect the winters in the Carolinas do not compare with mine in Canada so I would suggest to go with the 335i, and buy a good set of winter tires with the $3000 you saved. Go on the BMW USA web site and do a comparison of the 335i and 335xi for more information.

here in SoCal i'd take the rwd just cause its more fun (imo), but if i lived in cold climate, i'd take awd just cause it makes sense to.

I don't think you need a 335xi in either Carolina's.

... Just go to BMW's website and spec out whatever you want. Then, go to Edmunds to figure the ball-park invoice.

Expect to pay at least $60k OTD for a true fully-loaded.

I got mine a stripper built just the way I like $45k OTD.

yeah true. it barely snows here. but im not lookin for a brand new one. just like a 2007-2010.

why do you think Car and Driver tested 335i (not 335xi) vs S4 ? They said that 335i is a better choice for track because it handles better

XI is a safety feature not performance in ANY way. It can launch faster in less then ideal conditions, its safer in snow (if both have winter tires), and its better and safer in rain. < and all that is not because its AWD, but because 335i doesnt have LSD (which was left out for marketing reasons)

edit: 335i with LSD will leave xi in dust in all conditions

Yeah Im gonna go with the 335i n just get some good winter tires. I just got to find a nice used one fully loaded with low miles.

I thought the 335xi has a nasty tendency to understeer compared to the 335i though.

xdrive is no quattro...its not worth it. people w/ awd have a superiority complex where they think their car is invincible...

go with the i, cheaper, less maintenace and better gas mileage along w/ performance...

I abhorred the (non-active) steering in the couple of xdrive loaners I got. xdrive will accelerate and corner better in the snow, if equipped with snow tires, but is FAR from a necessity. Under braking, the grip is exactly the same as the i model. The way people post on here about how crucial xdrive is in the snow makes one wonder how civilization survived until the mid 90s when AWD became popular. From my point of view, why make a sacrifice related to driving for 3/4 of the year when for 1/4 of the year you may have to be a little more prudent with your decisions? It's not like any car really "shines" in the winter anyway - the xdrive just gives a little more piece of mind during winter. If you're driving just to "get there" IDK if a BMW is the car for you anway

Just because people believe in the advancement of technology and awd . It doesn't mean that if awd was readily available in the 60s,70s & 80s that people wouldn't have been happy to pay the premium to have that option.

I have an awd and I love the fact that with all the power this car has modded that I have less of a chance to lose control in certain conditions.

Does that mean I feel I can go 70 in the snow, of course not, but the extra piece of mind is definitely worth the extra weight even if it does hinder performance.

I actually found myself more readily reaching and nearly exceeding the xdrive's grip limits due the lack in communication - I'm much more used to my steering weighting up hinting at how much grip the fronts had left to give. With xdrive (in the dry) it all seemed like a leap of faith
