ERROR MESSAGE: Please insert navigation disk!

Friends,

I have a 2007 335i, last week when I tried to use my nav it gave me an error to insert the navigation DVD.

I have tried everything:

1. Took out the DVD then inserted in back again
2. Restarted the car
3. Took the nav DVD and inserted a mp3 DVD and it played with no problem.

I took the car to the dealer and dealer says that I have to replace the drive. Which to me is not right because I can play the mp3 DVD but cannot use the nav DVD. They want 550 for it so I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem and if there is anything I can do to fix it or how hard is it to replace the DVD drive (if I had to) myself.

Could it be that the disk is bad...because I checked the disk and the are no scratches or scuffs on it. Looks very clean and new.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you...

I had the same problem. It started intermittently on several long trips from DC to FL and back. Progressively got worse. Tried my 2011 Nav DVD thinking it was a scratch/deformed DVD. Made know difference. Once Sterling replaced with a new drive unit problem solved

Looks like dead DVD drive (the head in it).
You may try to use good quality cleaning CD for your drive first, however most probably it will not help so you should be changing your DVD drive.
