E90 320i Oil Advice

Getting more and more confused about oil the more i read.

I am going away from long life oil and going back to frequent 6 monthly oil and filter changes; some people may think that its excessive, but i have done it with all my cars and bikes. The thought of LL oil going 2 years without a change sits wrongly with me

So should i be using 0w-40 or 5w-30?

0-30W which is used by most dealers. Ideal if your car is on low mileages.
5-30W should be fine if you are not expecting very cold winter. (you never know)
0-40W would be best for both worlds, for cold winter and cruel summer....max protection. However your mpg may go slightly low due to thickness of oil.

Last time I used 5-30W during the winter as winter was not bad last year. 0-40W is waiting to go in my car but I have max done 2-3K in last 6 months, possibly will change in winter time again.

Shortie 7-10K is fair, 5K is far below the recommendations, unless you do very short trips and during which car is not warmed up properly.

Cheers Makkan00, yours always helpful

Probably go with 5-30W then; was only going by the haynes manual with the other viscosities.

Let us know if your mpg drops with the 0-40W, i cant afford my mpg to drop anymore with the current fuel prices lol.... i cry every time i go to the pump

Is 5 litres enough for a full change on a 320i?

Shortie you need 4.25 liters if you are changing the filter as well.

Castrol Edge should be fine, but I personally prefers Mobile 1 ESP.

or I have used this

Makkan00, thanks for all the advice as usual.

What filter removal tool do i need? The metal ones are different sizes or the strap one?

You are welcome mate.
Go for e-bay item number: 220889484412

If you go for strap / chain, you will need to take the whole engine cover off, and there is another issue with that.

I hope you bought original BMW filter.

All the best mate. Good to see that you are maintaining your own car rather taking it to stealers or local garages.

325i is 6 cylinder and I think you require more oil. How much, refer back to your manual.

Sorry mate, what actually are you asking?
There should be two values of oil given;
1 with filter change
and 1 without filter change

So you put the oil (specified amount) in, and check it after running your car for 8-10 miles.
