Hey
Congrat for your new Mac, love it. Got already a Macbook and Imac (17" though). My next move definitively the 24" 2.8, next year. For all PC users out there, but BMW lovers For me Mac computers are to computing what BMW is in the car world, one of the best And please don't , this is just my view on it Steph |

I ordered my new iMac today- 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme, 28" screen, 1TB HD, wireless Mighty Mouse & AppleCare.
I decided to make use of the Higher Educational Discount. Ordered 4GB of RAM from Crucial for it & 2GB for the previous Macbook- shame Apple insist on installing RAM themselves. I'm just deciding on a nice Terabyte drive & gigabit router to go with it, so I need a bit of help deciding. I was looking at the LaCie Big Disk / Big Disk Extreme+, as a desktop drive, or the LaCie Ethernet Big Disk, to use as a gigabit network drive. As for the router, I was thinking about a D-Link DIR655 or upcoming DIR855 or the Netgear WNR854T. I really wanted the gigabit router to increase WAN down speeds above 10Mb, as I've got a 20Mb Virgin connection & speeds are improved when the broadband modem is connected directly to the PC / Mac, bypassing the old Netgear router. Increasing transfer speeds between computers is less of a necessity. The main reason for an external HD was to help maintain a backup procedure across a network of 2 wired & 1 wireless computers. However, it's only really important that I don't lose my data- the wife doesn't give a sh*t whether she loses anything or not. The fact that Leopard, in the new iMac, will make use of Time Machine was another 'incentive' for planning the purchase. Really, I just need to figure out if I'd be better off buying a network drive with USB2 connectivity, or an 'ordinary' FW400/800/USB2 drive. So, if anyone has any thoughts and experience, please could you help me to decide. Cheers. Also, I was 'playing with 'Parallels v3' (let's you install 'virtual' operating systems) on the Macbook today & installed Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 on it, just for 'fun'. It was a strange experience, but I think I might end up using this set-up on the iMac, with the old PC ending up in the garage. All the best. Viv |
