Remote radar mount location
Bought the 8500ci and was looking at sensor mounting possibilities. Does the sensor need to be mounted behind the grill toward the top? Or can it be mounted in the lower section of the bumper? I did a little searching and most people seem to put it behind the front grill. Not an easy mounting location in that area.

Unobstructed is best for maximal detection. Remember, the 8500ci does not have the same radar horn as the 9500ci and is not as sensitive. Best to mount the 8500 reciever unobstructed. There, I said unobstructed 3 times.

I put mine behind the front grill and it works great. I had the installer fabricate a mount to hold it up some from the bottom of the grill area. Easy to mount it there if you take out your grill. :-)

So my brother-in-law is a CHP, And basically says radar detectors are a waste of money. So how does this radar detector detect lasers? The way I understand it by the time it's detected its too late.

Not too concerned about lasers. We have intersections and mobile vans that use Ka band guns. For this purpose, radar detectors work fine. Give me plenty of notice to check my speed. Decided to go integrated instead of windshield mount.
Rollo, can you take a picture so i can get an idea? Thanks |

In my experience, most of the CHP, probably including your bro in law, leave their radar hot when they are using the lidar and give away their position miles in advance. My 9500 will pick them up around corners frequently as long as there is some metal around to bounce the signal

Yes your bro-in-law is correct, radar detectors are a waste of money. I don't know why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars for something that is worthless. You can go ahead and tell him that.

I'll try to get a picture on Saturday.
There are not a lot of lasers in use in my area so my chief threat is ka...typically the police leave it on so I get detection well in advance. |
