I posted this in the UK section but not had much replies, just wondering if you guys and gals can help me identify whether this noise means the turbo is on its way out?

Noticed this today when I press the accelerator and lift of I get this faint air leak/whining noise. i am not sure if this is normal or what it could be?

BTW its a 2008 and done 105k miles

Sorry, but I can't hear a thing.

Does it feel like your car has lost power? Vacuum hose would be the first thing that comes to mind.

Have you listened to the clip on photobucket from 9 secs? I had trouble uploading the video on photobucket
After I let go of the accelerator there is a faint whine? Maybe its me?
I noticed a drop in power below 3k revs but when I scanned for codes it came up with the boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor). So I replaced that and it has helped. But sometimes at the lower revs it feels its lagging?

I have replaced 2 vacuum hoses, the outer braiding was perished but actual hose was ok. I replaced it with 4mm silicone hose, I did notice the original hoses are 3.5mm so the 4mm silicone hose is slightly loose - should that make a difference?

I have replaced the red turbo boost pipe/oil breather.

I am looking at replacing the vaccum tank and pressure coverters but not sure if the pressure converters would contrubute to that noise?

I would go straight ahead and say one of your turbo's has gone. If it was my car, I would be very reluctant to run it seeing what damage can be caused if it lets go completely and just have it flatbedded to the dealer.

I'm no expert though, so don't put money on my diagnosis!

Would you say you can hear a whine coming from the turbo in my video clip?

How loose does the 4mm hose feel on the connection and is there a possibility that the clamped hose connection is pinched? Typically with instrumentation type connections you want a very snug fit even before you clamp.

I can pull it off with a tug so I presume it is too loose, I will replace it with correct size diameter. I dont think it is pinched but will double check.

By using silicone hose will that affect it any way?
I am thinking of replacing them with oem vac hoses from BMW but they tend be expensive per metre (about $20 per metre over here from BMW)

I am glad its not just me then. I replaced 2 vacuum hoses with ebay silicone vac hoses. I am going to order genuine BMW vacuum hose and re fit and see if the noise goes away. I dont think it is to do with the silicone vac hose, i checked the connections and they look ok. I used cable ties on the end just to make sure it is a secure fit and its not crimping the hoses.

But with replacing them with genuine ones I may end up taking it to a dealer if the noise still remains (as much as every part in my body says no dealer) but I dont want them to say the fault because of non bmw vaccum hose.

I am getting this exact same sound from my e60 530d. For a while i have this sound since getting car remapped. But a day or so later till now have problems with power. Hesitant and judder at low revs when applying power and rpm fluctuates up and down at constant speeds. I believe now after sorting few other parts of car performance related its down to air leak.

I will be looking at the gasget that goes inside pipe connecting to turbo and other end to maf sensor.

both pressure convertors were replaced by BMW and the noise has gone since then. I did mention the noise and the guy said he would have a look at hoses to see any splits

came back without the noise
