On my E46, I first used gloss black spray paint on my chrome grill. After a while i chipped off and the chrome was showing again. After sanding it down, I tried out plasti dip before considering to just buy black grills and it lasted a long time. I would consider trying this for your trim too, as this is completely reversible (if done correctly). If you change your mind, you just peel it off. No residue like with removing vinyl like stated above.

Blackout Chrome
I have done my window trim. The hard part is to trim the excess. I use 2 parts to join the curve (back window), instead of try to "bend" the vinyl to follow the curve.
I will do the lower part of the windows trim later. (Sorry for the up-side-down photo) Last edited by josehon; 06-16-2015 at 10:42 AM.. |

Blackout Chrome Completed
Completed it last night for the lower part of the trim.
I use 1 roll 3" wide vinyl, just enough to cover all trims. The vinyl from Shadowline is actually made by Avery. |

I used http://shadowlinetrim.com/ it was great stuff. The only thing I didn't like about the vinyl was the pain in the ass it was to take off, as I decided to go back to my standard chrome trim

I wouldn't recommend removing the trim pieces to plasti dip them. Your adding a lot more work and risk damaging them. I do recommend TAKING YOUR TIME when you mask off everything and spraying at least 5 thin coats. Those wraps look great but plasti dip is twice as easy, peels off if you f**k up, and requires very little prep. The over spray peels off following body lines, contours, badges, etc, which is another advantage IMO.

Where can I purchased the trim already blacked out, a link would be nice?
I had my friend vinyl the trim while I was away, he opted to plastic dip it instead, really don't like the way the piece came out. |

What's with all the hate for plastidipping? It can turn out very well and save you tons of $$.
Honestly I wouldn't recommend vinyl wrapping it yourself if you have no prior experience. It's extremely challenging to wrap it perfectly and chances are you are going to mess up somewhere, likely at the curves. Plastidipping is very easy to learn, even for someone who's never done it before. As long as you follow the procedures that people have listed out here already, there's no going wrong. I plastidipped my window trim over a year ago, and it still looks good. I would have gone the wrapping route, but local shops were quoting $350-$450 for the job, which is ridiculously high. Here's some pictures from my plastidipping:

xXSupa, I'm not say it can't come out well, I'm saying a friend of mine did it for me while I was away on vacation and it came out very poorly. It looks very nice on your car tho!
