Mixing tyres

Sorry, tried to search for this but couldn't find the right thread...

I just got a puncture in one of my front tyres....

I wanted to get the Michelins PS2 runflat for ages....

Can I put Michelins PS2 runflat at the front and still keep my Bridgestone Potenzas RE050 Runflats at the rear?

Will this have any adverse effect in the handling?...

or should I just get another set of Bridgestones?

If I sell the whole lot ....is ebay any good? (I don't even have an account! and understand how these bidding work!...)

I have 2 bridgestone RFTs in that size in my garage, you interested?

Need to check tread, but I know they are still legal.

Yes, as long as you don't mix across the same axel the RFT on fronts and non-RFT on rear is fine.

This should be fine.

Michelins are slightly softer, so you will need to play around a little to get the pressures right.

i ran p zero run flat on the rear and ps2 run flat on the front and was ok ran it for 2 years nothing to worry about

Thanks guys...don't think my tyre insurance will cover for PS2.... :-( (at least, its keepin me from spendin money) guess i'll have to deal with the bridgestone for another year...

Hi

Are you saying that it's OK to have RFT's on the front and non-RFT's on the rear?

I am looking to change my tyres soon and the rears are worn, whereas the fronts are OK. People keep offering different advice on this issue.

i dont get why your insurance wont cover you for PS2 run flats, you can change your tyres to any brand as long as they are runflats, maybe when you change to non runflat you have to ring up, what happens if they run out of stock on bridgestones i know they wont, but what u going to do drive on bold tyres till you wait for them to re-stock

Yes, whilst not perfect, fine for most, plenty of people have done it.

Claiming back from insurance is always a headache!...Kwik fit's computer was "down" today....so the guy had to make a few phone calls to confirm the claim etc./...

I already told him that I had Bridgestone Potenzas on....so didn't bother asking if I could get PS2s instead and I just took 1 potenza tyre covered by the insurance...didn't hav to pay for anything...guess its worth it to have tyre insurance when you got a puncture!...

I'm currently running this combination while I wait for four new tyres to be delivered (one of my front PS2's blistered over the weekend). I had a couple of old RFT's from the 335 sitting in the garage, so threw these on the front.

Currently running 265/35 PS2's on the rear and 225/35 Bridgestone RFT's on the front.

While I'm driving fairly carefully with this combination, surprisingly it's not too bad.

the front feels a bit skitish but you get used to it and learn not to push too hard. soon to be all non rft.

All manufacturers say you shouldn't do it, you might say they're being cinical money grabbers, but they usually say things for a reason i.e. protecting themselves from compo claims.

They all seem to say definitely NOT across axles, but even in axle pairs only in exceptional or emergency conditions and should be changed to a full set of RFT or NON RFT as soon as possible.

From my point of view it would also be about the ghastly handling mix as well, as some have said "it feels a bit iffy but just take it steady" Hmmm safe & sound?

LOL...Ed, I don't think u shud be mixing runflats and nonrunflats mate!!!.....especially on an M3....make sure u drive slowly for the time being...

I'm even a bit annoyed that I now have a brand new tyre on the left side and all the others rae in "ok" condition...

I have found some combinations of mixing tyres front to rear have been almost lethal.

Where as other times you can't really tell.
Worst for me is when PS2s are mixed with a symmetrical tyre.

I know, but needs must and I needed something on ASAP as I couldn't source the right tyres locally in time.

Having said that, I'm only driving at speed in a straight line and not being silly (25mpg on the current tank proves that!).

A new set should be arriving Thursday/Friday and hopefully fitted Saturday.
