HID OWNERS help! HID Fog light housing damage?!
Just bought a used m sport bumper and put 35 WATT 4500k HIDs on it the other day.
Today, worried about possibly having the fogs on too long, i inspect the fogs. The driver side housing is bubbling. At first i thought it was condensation but its actually the chrome bubbling off the interior housing. The passenger side is fine however. Previous owner says both are same age (never replaced). misc. notes: While waiting on hid bulbs to come in, i drove my car with out anything in socket and noticed condensation on both fogs, driver a little more. Car sat in garage for a while before bulbs where installed but problem was never addressed. Questions:

My fogs from other bumper ran HID all the time or 2 years, no problem
Also, don't quote me, but I've rear HIDs operate cooler than incandecent. Incandecent produces more infrared. Last edited by E90PAT; 08-08-2012 at 08:41 PM.. |

As long as you stay with the 35W HID, and use quality bulbs, the housings will be fine. As stated above, most HID bulbs, of comparable wattage to halogen or incandesent, will run cooler.
Now if you had installed 55W HID - they are know to melt the oem housings. I've had HPB 35W HID in my fogs for 2 years with nary a problem

Cheap HID bulbs that put out a lot of UV and heat could, damage the chrome coating on the fog housing.
There was a rep projector fog that was definitely having this issue with HID kits being thrown in it, without adequate air-flow around the unit. |
