Excess Crankcase Pressure from Catch Can
My car is out of warranty but at 48k miles the dealership changed my valve cover gasket. I'm at about 55k miles now and noticed oil on my cylinder 2 and 3 spark plugs.
Dealership said it is no problem for me to bring it in and they'll honor the warranty. I just got off the phone and they said the gasket looks fine but the catch can is causing excess pressure which is why the gasket is leaking again. This dealership has always done right by me and I know this has been a topic that was covered when catch cans were talked about. My catch can never really caught anything in the past 15k miles I've had it on my vehicle. It is the BSH(I think thats it) catch can which mounts next to the windshield tank. Just wanted to give an update as I will now be removing my catch can and going back to stock. |

Hmmm if CC didn't catch much oil then it's not functional especially since i know you push your car. People who capture no oil usually grandma their cars. My cheap ass Riss Racing captures alot of oil. Last time I checked it captured and filled about a inch of the bottom of a red Solo party cup.

These story's make me want to steer clear of OCC's no matter how good they claim to be. I'd rather clean my valves and intercooler than have to deal with the bigger problems it can cause.

IMO Having a CC installed and not capturing any type of oil in it, I would definitely be concerned as it would prove its a poorly designed CC. Like i said my cheap
Ass RR CC captures alot of oil. Sure I have to change the o rings everytime I take it out to clean it, but I am damn sure it works and I know most of the oil vapors are not going intO my charge piPe or intercooler. In fact I just took apart my charge pipe a couple of weeks back and it was pretty clean. No signs of oil. A CC not catching oil will for sure create increase crank Pressure. A functional one not as much |

Not sure why it doesn't catch a ton of oil. The install was pretty straightforward and my car never burns oil and when I just did my valve cleaning they weren't horrible. So I guess ill just be removing my system and put it up for sale. |

Just remove it, my car runs better without and stopped consuming oil...

I run no catch can, 60 k miles, extremely low oil consumption (about 1/2 liter per 10,000 miles).
Are you sure that it wasn't just spilled oil in the cylinder head valley? The oil fill is right at cyl 2/3 area, and people spill oil down there often.

Ya I'm sure. You might remember I've been tinkering around in that area a lot with the boost solenoids and all. It wasn't there last week. And its def not coming from the oil filter. I pulled my plugs and cylinder 2 and 3 were soaked.

Try removing it and see;-) bsh is probably one of the worse occ out there... The bms is supposed to work great. I have it brand new but did not have the chance to install it

For some reason the BSH is hit or miss. We move a lot of the BMS OCC lately. I think the design is better then most OCC available. |

In a month or so I will be happy to do a write up on the BMS OCC, I installed i the day before my charge pipe broke(previousownerproblem) so the car has never run this particular charge pipe without an OCC on the car. In a month or so when I go to empty it for the first time It wouldn't be too much trouble to yank the airbox and charge pipe, and see what it looks like. Figure a brand new pipe the exact same time you OCC is about a good a gauge as you can get right? lol

A Good design cc will def capture some type of oil. For those that have cc and no traces of oil in it, I would yank it and install another different setup. BMS looks to be the best one out now, well other than my cheap Riss racing CC that is

Well pulled the plugs which were covered with oil on cylinders 2 & 3 still. Pulled the catch can and went for a 30 minute drive.
Let the car cool down and pull cylinder 2 & 3 plugs and there doesn't seem to be any oil now. Perhaps a 30 mile jaunt isn't enough of a test period. If the weather is nice I plan on doing a Intake Valve Cleaning DIY video since I'll have some free time in the morning. |
