Accelerometers are extremely accurate, cruise missile guidance systems use them as well.
It's really amazing the amount of technology they have crammed into these Iphones and Ipod touch units. It's about as close to a Star Trek tricorder as you can get...

I just read this thread and jp's other thread and wow you are terribly biased against the iPhone! For someone that doesn't have one, you seem to have a lot of experience with it

Oh I know, but an iPhone isn't exactly a missle, haha. I just wasn't sure how accurate the accelerometer in the iPhone actually is.

I have one now, that's why. I still maintain that the originals were worthless though. I can't imagine having the first gen iPhone and being stuck with Apple's apps. 3G + Exchange + Apps made the iPhone worth having for me.

Anyway, that last thread went off on a tagent. Leave it there, no need for it over here.

I'm not sure why my questioning of the accelerometer's accuracy has caused such a stir. It's a logical thing to question when calculating such complex numbers based on one simple device.

Nothing against the iPhone, just the method.

Fair enough. We just have to find out man. I think we can all agree that having this sort of technology on a phone is pretty amazing. I'm not expecting it to be a perfect measurement but it will be fun to have fair estimations of what my car is capable of. If anyone knows someone that has a g-tech or v-box this software could be validated or invalidated very quicky.

PS - Push email via Exchange on the iPhone is the greatest thing ever

Just did 1 quick run from a stop-60. Spun my tires too much in 1st so the results were bad, but still results.

I need to do some setting changes because it showed i had 208 peak horsepower to the wheel that is haha.

Max speed was super accurate...showing 63.3...which is scary because that was the exact speed i let off at.

Max acceleration was 0.90G's

Acceleration:
0-10 0.96sec
0-20 1.81sec
0-30 2.92sec
0-40 3.96sec
0-50 5.08sec
0-60 6.66sec

Dont take my times as a result of this APP not being accurate, because tires were cold and car was still idle cold & I am stock w/ MT. I am going to do some more testing to see how accurate i can get the Peak HP and acceleration...

Oh hell, if for nothing else, this would be fun for laughs even if it wasn't extremely accurate. Buying!

I'm about to go run to lunch so I'll get some tests as well.

Pics of my setup

Found the PERFECT CRADLE!!! Its just a clear hard plastic Iphone case i had and never used. Attached 3 strips of double-sided 3M tape to the back of it and placed in the armrest piece. Fits super snug and DOESNT MOVE AT ALL. Then i can just place my phone in it and even put the case cover over it...in case i flip my car, the phone wont fall out
