How much memory have you got left on it? If you haven't got enough to download the gigabit update, then it does odd things.

I find it much better to back up to a PC and then update via that. When you do that, the lack of storage isn't an issue as the update is held on your PC.

Memory wise there is planty TBH on both units are 16GB and compares with a lot of people's memory wise both are under-utilised

Hard reset usually does the trick. Hold the home button & lock button (about 5 seconds) till the device turns off and restarts with apple logo.

Edit: Sorry just realised you tried that, DOH

Depending how old it is the updates might require an iOS newer than the device can run, but it usually alerts you of this.

Delete the app and re-download? After checking there's no iOS restrictions.

Oddly enough that was my next move, the apps that are unable to update are mainly the misses games where she's downloaded them there's the odd app such as Google Maps,BBC News etc that again won't update you get the message 'could not purchase X at this time. Please try again later' that message every time you swich on comes up at various intervals for various apps.

So next step is to delete, re install and see what happens
