Power Loss due to water pump codes?
Hey all, I’m curious if anyone has experienced power loss (little to no boost) due to error codes associated with the water pump?
I’m experiencing a loss of power, but when I turn off the car and back on again everything seems fine. I pulled error codes from the DME that were 2E81 and 2E82 which are flow/water pump codes. I have been noticing the water pump get louder (like a card stick in a bike spoke) so I believe the codes are legitimate, but I wouldn’t think to experience power loss unless the computer is limiting power to prevent engine damage… makes sense but curious if anyone else has see that? I have a JB4 and I was monitoring the water temperature as part of my stealth gauge (not sure the accuracy) but everything seemed to be within a normal operating mode, ~180-190°F water temps and 220°F Oil temps. The issue is happening on at least 2 maps of the JB4, not sure about stock yet since its intermittent. Any thoughts?

Those ECU codes mean that your water pump failed. Once you get a red engine overheating symbol in the dash, your car will go to limp mode and the car will lose power. This is pretty dangerous because it could happen anywhere. Imagine your car loosing power in the middle of a busy highway. You can "trick" the ECU by turning off the car for a couple of minute and then turn your car back on, and it will let you run normally for a couple of miles. I don't recommend this because you will be on risk to damage the engine head gasket (pretty expensive repair). For more information you can search the forum for "water pump". There are very good threads regarding this issue and a very good DIY guide if you decide to replace the pump yourself. Hope this help.

Thanks for the info. The only thing that was strange to me was that I wasn't getting any indication on the cluster of over temperature... Just the loss in power but the engine check said all systems were ok. I am going to change the water pump regardless. I was just hoping someone could confirm the issues are related, or if my car will self destruct one day for two separate issues. anyone else have thoughts?

Sounds like the water pump is on its way out. Best to change it ASAP. It monitors water pump speed, and any discrepancy can cause the engine to reduce power to prevent overheating.
Always replace the thermostat along with the water pump.

The thermostats can go bad, and you have to pull it all out again to change it once it does throw MAP Cooling fault codes. There is a small heater element the ECU can use to prematurely open the thermostat when needed.

2011 may have been the year of the crappy fuel pumps, 2012 shaping up to be the year of the craptastic water pumps.
