Line out, new aux socket, still bad sound quality.

Hey.

Using a line out signal into the aux socket(new Oem part), but sound quality is still seriously lacking. Cable is high quality and shielded. (L+R RCA Phono to 3.5mm).

The Bmw Pin connecter on the aux socket has 3 pins in use. (L+R and a Gnd). Strange thing is that if I remove the Gnd Pin, the sound quality improves. If I push to one side the 3.5mm pin on the cable end (while plugged in) sound quality improve even further with a good low ends, mids and highs.

I would rather not leave the Gnd pin disconnected as well as jamming something in to hold pressure on the cable end.

Anyone have any suggestions or experienced similar issues?

Thank you

Wait, did you wire the AUX yourself?

If you did, did you use shielded 3 wire cable?
If yes, did you wire the shield to the CCC/RAD?

Thank you for your response.

Sorry you mis understood. I didn't rewire the aux. To investigate the bad sound quality I wanted to examine the the wiring plugged into the aux socket in the centre arm rest. I popped the aux socket out of its holder and exposed the plug end.

There are 3 wires that are in use. Yellow, Black and a transparent white wire. I am assuming these are L + R and the see thru cable is the Gnd. While audio is playing, when I use my thumb and push the 3.5mm end to one side (while plugged into aux in centre arm rest) the sounds changes quite noticeably.

I understand that if you use a headphone out from a phone or mp3 player that sound quality would be lacking anyway. This makes sense to me, however I am using a line out signal from the device thats playing audio and it still sounds bad. Sorry doesn't sound bad, just hasn't got any volume or real depth. Volume is turned up on external audio device and I checked the 3.5mm cable on other devices too. (On home stereo). Checked out Ok. The cable I'm using is a stereo L+R RCA Phono to 3.5mm and is 3meters long. Could the length cause any problems?

I replaced the aux socket anyway as wasn't too expensive. Made no difference at all.

Any other suggestions or something else I could try.

Thank you for your help.

The wiring you mentioned is correct..

The symptoms you mention happen when the common ground is not connected..

I think the connector might be at fault here, since you already changed the socket..

It is easy to obtain from the dealer, couple of quid..

I don't understand what you mean. Which connector? Are you referring to the 3.5mm plug connector on the cable end which is plugged into the aux socket?

Thanks

I think deep is referring to later one.

I checked the aux connector plug wiring. From the underside of the aux socket all the way back to behind the HU. where it slots into the idrive block connector. Examined the wiring as well as the pins etc. Couldn't see anything to suggest faulty wiring and respective pins are seated and connected ok.

Does anyone know if the wires go from aux socket directly to back of HU or is there another join under the center console.

Could it be that something inside the HU is gone wrong?

Any help or suggestions would be great

Thank you

I'm also curious if there's a fix for the horrible sound quality while using the AUX input.

It is hard to troubleshoot this, only thing I could recommend is to change the connector into the AUX. Give it a try..

Nope, not going to happen. It does improve when AUX goes through Combox.
But at the end of the day, AUX is just that, Aux.. :-(
