Question How much is my M3 worth?

Hi all

I'm considering selling my M3 to fund a year off to travel around the world with the misswah. I wondered what my M3 is worth and would value your opinions

Here is the spec:

E92 M3 Coupe V8 4.0 manual
Sept 2007 registered, with "M3" private plate included
First owner was Cooper BMW as a demonstrator
I purchased the car in June 2008 with 4,500 miles on the clock
Current mileage 24,200
Silverstone II metallic paint
Black Novillo Leather
19" M Double-spoke alloys
Carbon interior leather trim
Electronic Damper Control (EDC)
Bluetooth phone prep and telematics
BMW Connected Drive-Assist
Voice Control
DAB Digital Radio
LOGIC7 Professional Hi-Fi System
USB interface
CD Changer
Park Distance Control front and rear (PDC)
Exterior trim high-gloss shadowline
Electric folding exterior mirrors
Adaptive headlights
Front seat heating
Front sliding armrest
Extended storage
Velour floor mats

Condition is immaculate apart from a few small stone chips on the front and a slight abrasion of the leather on the door side of the driver's seat

FSH - Had an oil change and new microfilter in July 2009. Next service is due June 2011 which will be done at BMW main dealer. First MOT passed with flying colours in Sept 2010

New Michelin PS2's put on last year, only done c.2k thousand miles

Taxed until 30 Nov 2011, MOT to Sept 2011

Additions - front black grilles, 6k xenons and 8.5k GP Thunder angel eyes

I attach some photos (credit to fellow forum member Matt mjh93sa). These are library pictures not current ones, but the car looks exactly the same today except with black front grilles added

Amazing car, amazing noise, turns heads and will be very sad to see her go...

What do you think?

Lovely looking Car and fantastic spec but unfortunately buyers market and not a great time to be selling a gas guzzling V8
There's dealers selling similar Cars from about £27K - £30K so if your no rush I would pitch somewhere between that but if you need a quick sale be prepared to be hit hard as dealers will be taking the piss in the low 20s.
Matt (RagingKileak) was looking at M3s last week so if he's not sorted yet I'm sure he'll be along soon

depends how quick a sale you need. PM Ragingkileak as he was looking for an M3 with your spec.

with the spec and mileage, I'd expect £28k

As I'm in the market to buy one, here is what I think (and I am going to try and be honest, non offensive and not blow smoke up your arse.)

For me, a 57 plate starts at £25k because that is (lets face it) what a poor/average specced, 40,000 mile car with 2-3 owners and in 'fair-good' condition can be had. I then start to add money on for spec I want, lower mileage, less owners, etc etc.

In your case here is my exact rationale (to be as helpful as possible, not to be a dick):

- Colour combo is 'ok' for me without being 'exciting'
- I like cars with fully traceable history which yours has (this often doubles as being the fewer owners, the better)
- DAB, USB, LOGIC7 and EDC are MUST have's for me if a car is going to take more than about £25.5k off me... If not, why even bother?
- Shadowline is highly desirable (I could wrap it as per the 135i, but I'd rather not have the hassle)
- Adaptive Xenons are an 'exciting' but non essential addition for me. That would help me choose yours over a similar car without them for sure
- CD Changer, Storage etc I'm not bothered about, but I like to see buyers put up a comprehensive spec list - it shows they cared, have the original documents or a print out etc from the dealer, all of which means I trust them just a little more

If you're getting the service done, I would encourage you to get the MOT done at the same time to make it June 2012 - this will just help prevent buyers using it as an excuse to haggle (I would if you DIDNT MOT it beyond Sept.)

I'd also be keen/interested to see and discuss the Angel Eyes/6K bulbs.... A lot of people spending this much money will perceive them as just above bodykits in the 'iffy' mods list... My thinking is usually to leave Xenons alone as they don't need to be brighter.... If you could explain the approval status and if they blind other drivers or help you see better at all, I would probably not hold it against the car to be honest.... You might consider swapping back to stock if possible though, or if it's really not an issue when driving - just don't mention it.

Tyres are a definite bonus, though for some reason I've found only about 1 in 5 buyers even bothers to look... Based on selling the 135, the Porsche and the 335d...

Oh and wheels - well everyone knows an M3 HAS to have 19's.... So all I do when looking is knock a massive chunk off if it doesn't to be honest....

I suppose the MOT point is raised in relation to the lights too - if the buyer (ignorant as many will be) perceives that you may fail an MOT, then you will have a struggle to sell to that person.

Anyway, value.... If I were making an offer (which I probably would, if you're interested) I would be happy to walk away having paid you something in the £28,000 region.

Here are some similar ones to help understand my rationale:

Black/Red with very similar spec and slightly lower miles (very comparable) from a dealer
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2751320.htm

Interlagos with lower spec (I reckon they have missed some, but still doubt it has what yours does) and more miles being sold by a garage full of cocks who once ripped me off
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2798507.htm

Decent looking car, comparable colour/mileage with more spec than listed (but still not as good as yours)
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2786189.htm

Similar car/mileage, worse spec, worse condition (stonechips)
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2673377.htm

Simialr car/mileage, similar spec, good condition and only £27,000 (but from an unknown, scouse seller)
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2679857.htm

As I said mate I know you've been around here for years (as have I) so I have no intention of offending. I like the car a lot, hence why I would be interested in buying it, but the simple truth is there is a LOT of competition out there to sell and as someone said earlier - the buyer with cash to spend is going to be slightly better off at the moment.

There are 2 or 3 cars above that I have rang about and some I might yet call, purely because I think they look like great value for money... None has jumped out and grabbed my attention yet, but your spec list and attention to detail is the kind of thing I look for when buying a car!!

Anyway, hope I've helped a little with some 'current' buyers opinion!!

Regards
Matt

Not sure on price, it's a good spec & low mileage though which will help - 30k is the very max i would have thought.

Good reason for sale as well I like travelling & have done a bit my time, but never went for a year though.

Any thoughts on where you want to go?

I'm in no rush to sell - just starting to think about value that's all

Its an absolutely gorgeous car and I've cared for it like no other I've owned. It will be difficult to say goodbye when she eventually goes

Well you never know mate, things might get better! Should you be interested, I'm in no rush to buy to be honest... It could tie in nicely.

Thinking of starting in India, then various Far East plus parts of China and a hop to Japan, Indonesia, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, island hop to West Coast US (Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii), San Francisco, US MidWest National Parks (Yosemite, Death Valley, Yellowstone) Seattle, Vancouver (visit family) to Calgary, fly to Toronto then Ottawa, Montreal, Niagara and then down through Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts to New York

Rough plan and with lots of overland travel not just flying point to point

Keep it if you can, I kept my 335D when i buggered off travelling for 6 months. It was great to come back home to a decent car, after all that time travelling around in transport that doesn't compare.

I remember your car from the Bristol meet some time ago, and it looked stunning. I'm sure it will be a sad day if you do sell it.

Have fun travelling you certainly won't regret it, if you want any tips let me know. A year sounds like a long time but it will fly by. Make the most of it.

It's a great car, I remember when you got it. I would buy it because
you have owned it for the past 3 years.

Woah That's some trip. I've been to quite a few of those places over the years but still envious!

+1 for overland travel. It's much better than flying, esp. if you have the time

Good to see you back mate. If you don't want to 'sell' I have an offer for you if it helps. I will buy it off you for £15k when you leave and I will run it for a few thousand miles to keep it ticking over. When you get back in a year you buy it back from me for £15k and you still have your car.
