Wow! That's some nasty stuff there!
Btw, opening the hood will only make the fire grow bigger due to the increased oxygen flow. You should have left it shut, but i guess i wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway ...

Good thing you're ok. I am curious to find out what exactly caught fire.

According to the original post, the OP didn't know there was a fire before he opened the hood.

To the OP:
If I understood your description correctly, initially (i.e. when you opened the hood) the fire was fairly localized. If so, which part of the engine compartment it was located in?

That is crazy! I had a buddy that left a shop rag in his engine bay near his alternator once and this same thing happened. But from where you pointed in the earlier post, I cannot think of any causes for this fire. Must have had a fuel leak.
